Producers Note
In 1722, Thomas Barton left his native Ireland to settle in Bordeaux, later founding a wine merchant company that still bears the Barton name today. His grandson, Hugh Barton, purchased Chateau Langoa, an elegant residence built in 1758. He was seduced by the architecture and its 20 hectares of vines planted in the Saint-Julien appellation. His passion and pride in his wine only grew when he saw Langoa awarded the rank of "Third Classified Growth" in the historic 1855 classification. Six generations later, the Barton story continues with Anthony's daughter, Lilian, and her two children, now writing the chapter of the 10th generation in Bordeaux.

Terroir and Vineyard
The plots that compose the Chateau Langoa Barton terroir overlook the river. The splendid slopes of quaternary gravel bring the grapes to full maturity, which undergo a rigorous selection process before being chosen for the Langoa Barton. The plowing is traditional, without weeding or herbicide.

The harvesting is done entirely by hand. After the de-stemming, the berries are carefully sorted, crushed, and poured in thermo-regulated wooden vats according to their plots. The alcoholic fermentation last from seven to ten days, and the extraction is always respectful of the juice by adjusting the number of pumpings depending on the cuvee and vintage. The maceration is about three weeks, and the juice is drawn in barrels lot by lot. The wine is then aged between 16 and 18 months in French oak barrels, of which 60% are brand new, in a cellar maintained at 15 degrees C. The wines are topped off three times a week to avoid any contact between the wine and air, and traditional racking is utilized via the so-called 'a l'esquive' technique.

Tasting Notes
Dense purple color. Very expressive nose with some notes of raspberry, blackberry, and violet. In the mouth, the wine is elegant, round, and smooth. Juicy with fresh red fruits. Long finish, very fruity.

Langoa Barton’s gravelly vineyard plots are still owned by the Barton family, who founded the estate in 1722. A blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc, fermented in thermo-regulated wooden vats for 7-10 days, and aged 16-18 months in barriques, 60% new.
Georgie Hindle: Seductive, beguiling nose. Taut, defined, precise, detailed. Soft, exotic spices add texture and frame to the fruit with silky, almost imperceptible tannins. Energetic, but not showy at all.
Vincenzo Arnese: Ripe and concentrated fruit aromas with blackcurrant and maraschino cherry. The palate opens up to chocolate and coffee. Intense and deep finish.
Andy Howard MW: A wonderful combination of classic Bordeaux style with modern winemaking. Intense palate, with integrated oak and hints of menthol, graphite and spice. Effortlessly graceful.

This wine, from the stablemate of Leoville-Barton, offers great fruit: blackberry flavors and structured black currants. With its tannins, spice and good acidity, the wine has a good future. Drink from 2023.

The 2017 Langoa Barton is medium to deep garnet-purple colored and features wonderfully pure scents of crushed blackcurrants, wild blueberries and black raspberries plus wafts of underbrush, dark chocolate and violets. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is laden with seductive black and blue fruits, framed by grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and perfumed.

Lots of crushed blackcurrants and chocolate on the nose, following through to a medium to full body with soft, friendly tannins that are caressing and beautiful. Drinkable now, but better after 2022.

The 2017 Langoa Barton is composed of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, which beings with inviting aromas of ripe red berries and currants along with florals, licorice, tobacco and mineral nuances all adding further complexity. It continues to impress on the palate with is elegant structure and excellent overall balance. This gorgeous Bordeaux displays wonderful purity and freshness through the long finish. It is an excellent wine from the vintage which will need some time to unwind, but ultimately should go on to evolve beautifully over the next two decades.

The 2017 Langoa Barton is so beautiful, just as it was en primeur. Rich, fleshy and seductive in the glass, the 2017 exudes charm from the very first taste. Succulent red cherry, red plum, mint, tobacco and blood orange all flesh out in this wonderfully inviting, alluring Saint-Julien from the Barton family.

Ripe, bright and fresh, featuring a terrific beam of cassis and plum fruit running through, flanked by anise and red tea notes and scored by a singed applewood accent on the finish. Needs a little time to unwind fully. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2022 through 2032. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.

Classic in nature, the fruit here is bright, fresh and crisp. Medium-bodied with a lively, crunch red berry center and finish, this will be better with at least 7-9 years in the cellar.

The 2017 Chateau Langoa Barton showed beautifully both times I was able to taste it. Black cherries, plums, leafy herbs and spring flowers all emerge from this medium-bodied, ripe, lively Saint-Julien that shows the pretty, charming, elegant style of the vintage. As with all the wines from this vintage, it’s not massive by any means, yet it is nicely concentrated and impeccably balanced. The blend is 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc, with harvest stretching between the 15th and 18th of September for the Merlot and the 22nd to the 29th of September for the Cabernet Franc [...] It’s still aging in 60% new oak.

Tasted blind. Deep ruby purple colour. Exotic baking spices on the nose together with brambly fruit. This fleshy richness continues on the palate. There is some restraint offered by grippy tannins but the fruit and plush oak come together to offer a very generous style. Good power without excess. (TP)
