2014 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon
Tasting Notes
The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon is a classic Howell Mountain wine with attractive aromas of blackberries, black cherries, freshly cracked walnut, and the recognizable minerality with crushed rock and graphite that we often find on Howell Mountain. The silky tannins are ripe, lush, and well-coated with a solid knit. It is an elegant yet dense wine with a velvety texture, great focus, and length.
Source
This wine is produced with Cabernet Sauvignon grown at Hughes Vineyard on the west side of Howell Mountain, from Welsh on Summit Lake Drive on the north side, and Carlson Vineyard on Linda Falls Terrace, all handpicked between October 9-15 and brought to the winery in our 35-lb picking bins.
Vinification
After a long hang-time, we harvested mid-October and sorted the berries on our state-of-the-art sorting tables with a crew of twelve. The must is cold-soaked for about seven days, using lots of dry ice and the cold glycol system to keep the must at 40 degrees F before the alcoholic fermentation starts. Extended maceration is common practice for us, and we taste each tank daily until we decide to barrel down the wine in 100% French oak barrels from 6 different coopers. The malolactic fermentation took place in barrels. No fining or filtering before bottling as we wish to preserve all the fine nuances the wine offers.

As for the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon from Howell Mountain, this is another winner, with beautiful mulberry, graphite, blueberry and black raspberry fruit, medium to full body, sweet tannin, good, vibrant acidity, terrific delineation and focus, and a long finish of a good 40+ seconds. This is elegance at its best and a beautiful example of Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink it over the next 15-20 years.

A big, savory wine, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain packs a serious punch. Today, the Howell Mountain Cabernet is marked by slightly burly tannins and a rough around the edges feel. It is also still in tank awaiting bottling, which may account for its somewhat angular, aggressive showing in this tasting.
