The 2020 'Les Hauts de la Ponche' Vacqueyras offers aromas of dark cherries and raspberries woven together with lavender, spice cake and a touch of wild herb nuances all taking shape. Medium-plus bodied with notable freshness, concentration and focus as ripe red and dark fruit continue to expand into the gorgeous velvety finish. A lovely Vacqueyras that will be accessible upon release and also develop nicely with a few years of bottle age.

Moving to the reds, the 2020 Vacqueyras Les Hauts De La Ponche is 50% Grenache and 25% each of Syrah and Mourvedre. It actually reminds me of a Pomerol with its red and blue fruit as well as bouquet garni, damp earth, and floral nuances. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, I love its balance, and it has silky tannins and remarkable purity of fruit. Drink bottles over the coming 7-8 years.

This has concentration, weight and depth, with dense but softly chewy tannins and enough acidity to counteract the warm alcohol, producing a satisfying, balanced and genuine Vacqueyras. Likely to be a good value option.

50% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 25% Mourvedre. Aged 10 months in concrete. Already bottled.
Deep crimson hue. Dark and red-berry nuance but quite restrained. Generous fruit on the palate, supple but layered, the tannins very fine. Good length and persistence with just a glow of alcohol on the finish. A big wine that merits a bit of cellar time. (JL)
