What Makes Bordeaux a Global Benchmark?

Grand Cru Classé of Médoc and Graves

In 1855, Bordeaux’s most distinguished châteaux were classified for Emperor Napoleon III. This historic Left Bank ranking includes First Growth legends such as Château Lafite, Margaux, Latour, and Haut-Brion, later joined by Mouton-Rothschild in 1973. These wines hail from celebrated appellations like Pauillac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe, and Haut-Médoc, crafted predominantly from Cabernet Sauvignon.

Classified Growths of Pessac-Léognan

Between 1953–1959, the top red and white wines of the Graves region were officially classified. Today, all Grand Cru Classé wines of Graves come from Pessac-Léognan, where rich reds and complex whites define the region’s legacy.

Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Émilion

On the Right Bank, the Merlot-driven wines of Saint-Émilion were first classified in 1955. The ranking is revisited roughly every 10 years and includes ascending tiers: Grand Cru Classé, Premier Grand Cru Classé B, and the ultra-elite Premier Grand Cru Classé A.

Pomerol: Prestige Without Classification

Pomerol remains unclassified, but its wines are among Bordeaux’s most prized. Here, elevated, gravelly clay soils produce deep, structured reds that age gracefully. Clos l’Église is one of the standout producers in this Right Bank appellation, offering exceptional quality and age-worthy elegance. Many nearby estates also deliver world-class expressions at more approachable levels.
