Meet Pine & Brown: A Small Napa Producer Worth Discovering
Pine & Brown started small. Tom Rees founded the winery in 2011 in a converted garage in the city of Napa and named it for the corner of Pine and Brown streets, where it began. From the start, the focus was Cabernet Sauvignon bottled by appellation, several hundred cases a year. In 2020, Neil Koch and Michael Hutchinson took over the brand.
That focus on place is still the best way to explore the wines. Napa Valley is home to 16 sub-appellations, and Pine & Brown gives each Reserve its own. Taste the Stags Leap District next to Mount Veeder, or Howell Mountain next to Oakville, and you will see how much soil, elevation and exposure shape a Cabernet.
- Stags Leap District: a small district on the eastern side of the valley floor, beneath the Vaca Range.
- Mount Veeder: steep vineyards high in the Mayacamas Mountains on Napa’s western edge.
- Howell Mountain: high-elevation vineyards in the northeast hills above St. Helena.
- Atlas Peak: volcanic slopes in the Vaca Range, northeast of the city of Napa.
- Oakville: the heart of the valley floor, home to some of Napa’s best-known Cabernet vineyards.
There is more to discover beyond Cabernet. A Russian River Valley Pinot Noir from Sonoma County and an Oakville Sauvignon Blanc round out the collection, so there is a bottle for every course and every guest.

A First Look at the November 11 Lineup
Here are three Pine & Brown bottles to keep on your radar.
93 Points: Pine & Brown Stags Leap District Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2024

Stags Leap District earned its place in wine history at the 1976 Judgment of Paris, and its Cabernets are prized for their depth and polish. Owen Bargreen rated this Reserve 93 points and describes a dense, delicious wine with notes of Arabica coffee, milk chocolate and rocky soils. Pair it with a grilled ribeye, braised short ribs or a rich mushroom pasta.
93 Points: Pine & Brown Mount Veeder Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2024

For those who love a bold, structured Cabernet, this is the one to try first. Mount Veeder is known for rugged mountain vineyards and expressive red wines. Owen Bargreen rated it 93 points, noting anise, wild blackberry and violet with a plush, mineral-laden palate. It is a natural choice for collectors and for special occasions.
Pine & Brown Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 2024

Looking for something lighter? This Pinot Noir brings Sonoma County into the spotlight. The Russian River Valley is cooled by Pacific fog and is celebrated for Pinot Noir with bright fruit and food-friendly acidity. Expect fresh strawberry, ripe cherry and raspberry on the nose. Serve it with roast chicken, mushroom risotto or the Thanksgiving turkey.
The rest of the November 11 collection includes the Howell Mountain, Atlas Peak and Oakville Reserve Cabernets and the Oakville Sauvignon Blanc 2025, a bright, refreshing white for the start of any holiday meal.
