Champagne Cuvee Comte de Marne Brut Grand Cru NV
History
Maison Charles Mignon is located in Epernay - the capital of the Champagne region. It is a town with a rich historical past, snuggled up along the Marne River between hillsides and forests. Since 2003, Charles Mignon is one of the few family Champagne houses to be a member of the prestigious Union des Maisons de Champagne. In 1995, Bruno Mignon, great-grandson of a winemaker, created Charles Mignon. With his wife Laurence, they perpetuate this love for the vine and wine while bringing a modern touch. The house owns a vineyard in Chouilly, a "Grand Cru" listed village. It is complemented by a family vineyard in the prestigious soils of the Vallee de la Marne, and with supply contracts, vines that are well spread out between the Cote des Blancs as a majority, Montagne de Reims, and Vallee de la Marne.
Production
Cuvee Comte de Marne Brut Grand Cru is produced only in top years, in small quantities. It is composed of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, selected from the best plots in Grand Cru villages (Louvois for the Pinot Noir; Chouilly, Cramant, and Avize for the Chardonnay) where the vines find expression in clay-limestone soils. Vinification in small stainless steel tanks, with systematic malolactic fermentation. The wine is then aged for three years in the Charles Mignon cellars before being bottled in replica 18th-century bottles.
Tasting Note
The intense golden appearance is topped with a slight fizzy foam of great finesse with subtle little bubbles. The wine initially displays floral notes like acacia on the nose, followed by dried fruit notes with almond. The mouth has a sweet and delicate interplay of floral notes and candied fruit aromas due to the quality of the grapes and the cellar aging. An excellent and distinguished wine. Subtle aromas marry with great length. Nice acidity and hints of white flowers with strawberry and mineral elements create a very drinkable wine.

Only made in the best years, this is a blend of 70% Chardonnay and 30% Pinot Noir from grand cru vineyards on Montagne de Reims 'Louvois' and the Cote de Blancs; Avize, Cramant and Chouilly. Tarte tannin apple, pear and pastry notes on the nose, buttery, rich and fully expressive in aroma but delicate and not at all overwhelming. Gentle hazelnuts combine with lemon and lime, white acacia flowers, fresh honey and green apple - crisp, elegant and forward while being balanced and sophisticated. The richness is perfectly matched to the freshness and delicate evervescence [sic] with roundness and a lovely gourmet taste overall. Lovely body and length. [...].

Hazelnut and apple blossoms on the light, floral nose. I was expecting something with a bit more power, but this is floral, lyrical, honeyed and gentle. Lacy bubbles. The acidity is so demure! Apricot and quince and the golden-honey kiss of plumcots. Pair with food carefully so as not to overwhelm the wine. (TC)
