2016 Red Pessac-Leognan Red
2016 Weather Conditions
Very rainy winter and spring, which allowed us to recharge the water tables. Hot and dry summer with relatively cool nights. At the beginning of September, a rainy episode allowed for the perfect ripening of the grapes. Harvest under sunny conditions, without rain, allowing the perfect maturation of the Cabernets until the end of October.
The Vineyard
Surface Area: 61 ha
Soil: Gravel stones overlaying a sandy clay matrix soil (between 2 and 4 meters deep), covering a limestone subsoil
Average Vine Age: 35 Years
Harvest: By hand in crates
Harvest Dates: From September 27 to October 20
Sorting: Sorted on a table before de-stemming and then sorted on a laser optical line
Production
Vinification: Plot by plot in small, temperature-controlled concrete vats using gravity flow for filling. De-stemming without crushing, regular punching down of the cap of skins, and long macerations (4 to 5 weeks).
Aging: In new French oak barrels (50%), second-fill barrels (40%), and third-fill barrels (10%) for 16 months
Alcohol: 13.00%
Blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc
Tasting Notes
The color is dark ruby with purple reflections. The nose opens up with a bright fruit. It continues with smoky, spicy (cumin seed, anise) cigar box notes, characteristic of the great Cabernets from the Leognan region. The impression remains fresh. The tannins are powerful yet very nicely grained. The palate is dense and long; the finish becomes salivating. This racy wine offers us a mouth-watering persistence and freshness. Concentrated, colorful, aromatic, and perfectly balanced. It is made to last.

What a brilliant vintage this is - just so complete. Honestly at this level, where prices don't change that dramatically between vintages, you should go for the 2016 if you have the option. It's on a different level in terms of depth and structure, and has opened up further from my tasting two years ago. You can drink it now, although will probably improve again over the next few years. Excellent Pessac-Leognan character, polish and balance but also plenty of black fruits and great chocolate; hard to argue with.

Very attractive, earthy aromas with an array of herbal and leafy notes, as well as a dark-berry thread and earthy complexity. The palate has great depth and drive with a bright array of juicy red and darker berries. Plush, ripe tannins. [...].

Also terrific, the 2016 Chateau Larrivet Haut-Brion is in the same league as the 2015 and offers a perfectly balanced, medium to full-bodied style as well as complex notes of red and black fruits, smoke tobacco, incense, and cedar. It picks up a Graves-induced cold fireplace note as it sits in the glass, and again, is a beautifully balanced, layered 2016 that has loads of character. Give bottles a few years and enjoy over the following 15+.
2016 Chateau Larrivet-Haut-Brion (Pessac-Leognan)
Points: 93
Elegant, refined, fresh and pure, the sweet, earthy, red fruits, tobacco and plums come through with ease. Medium bodied, soft and sweet, here you find lift, energy and loads of smoky red berries. This should age quite nicely.

92-94. Barrel Sample. With tannins that are ripe and velvety, this is already a generous wine. At the same time, it has a line of acidity that keeps it crisp and brings out the black currant fruitiness. Put the two elements together and the wine will be on top form after 2027.

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Larrivet Haut-Brion reveals a beguiling, earthy/truffle-laced nose with notions of crushed rocks, tilled soil, fungi and mossy bark over a core of warm cassis and blackberry compote. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is elegantly crafted with soft, fine-grained tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with a quiet intensity of savory nuances.

A bit compact still, with cedar and singed vanilla notes holding the core of lightly mulled currant and blackberry fruit at bay for now. A sanguine hint checks in on the back end, with the cedar element emerging, lending a slightly austere edge to the finish. Best from 2022 through 2030.

The 2016 Larrivet Haut-Brion has a very pleasant bouquet of red currant and cranberry fruit, plus cedar and light mint aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly raw tannins, but it feels fresh and there is decent vigor on the finish. This is a bit “all thumbs” at the moment; hopefully time will knit everything together. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.
