Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2019
Vintage Details
2019 was characterized by generally regular weather. A winter with sporadic and not abundant rainfall, accompanied by temperatures between zero and around 10 degrees C. Spring followed with a clear change in rainy days, enriching the soil to overcome summer temperatures. The rise in temperatures brought budding at the right time. The hot summer with some precipitation accompanied the plant's growth and subsequent regular and optimal ripening for gradual phenological development. The harvest began mid-September and ended in the first ten days of October.
Vinification
Harvest was carried out manually with an initial selection in the field, which was then destemmed. The grapes were further sorted on the sorting table. Fermentation took place for approximately 10 days in steel tanks at a controlled temperature, never above 28 degrees C, followed by maceration on the skins for 15 days. The drawing off is followed by malolactic fermentation.
Aging
The wine stays in 25-hl French oak barrels and partly in 65-hl Slavonian oak barrels for at least 24 months. In the third year, the wine is bottled to complete its aging period in a temperature-controlled warehouse before being put on the market.
Tasting Notes
Brunello 2019 has a ruby red color with lively notes. The nose is floral and bold, with hints of black cherries, wild roses, and tobacco. In the mouth, it is decisive and vibrant, with an enveloping and savory finish.

Tasting Note: Fragrant and refined, the 2019 Scopone Brunello is the best Brunello I’ve had so far from this estate. It has enticing scents of violet, iris, sun warmed hay, leather and wild berry. But it really comes into its own on the savory palate thanks to ripe Morello cherry, crushed raspberry, licorice and crushed mint. A backbone of velvety tannins provides seamless support while fresh acidity keeps it balanced. Already almost accessible it will also offer years of enjoyment.

Aromas of black cherries with slate, mushroom, and bark follow through to a medium body with juicy tannins and a savory finish. Solid fruit and tannin balance. Needs three to four years to soften. Best after 2025.

The nose has the weight of earth, soil, herbs and crushed rocks, but also the edge of tart berries and bitter citrus. The palate synthesizes the sophisticated bitterness of abundant citrus, barely-ripe berries, plum skin and iron-rich soil.

The 2019 is autumnal in its overture of chestnut, brushwood and rosehip. Red berries join in on the perfumed palate. While tannins are ripe, they sport a slight astringent tug giving texture and rustic intrigue. Unpretentious in character. With its new releases, Scopone has revamped its labels to signal the estate’s change in ownership in 2021. While we won’t see the full extent of this transition for another couple of years, there is enough here to warrant a watchful eye.

Dark ruby in color, the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino is ripe and appealing with aromas of sweet blackberries, licorice candies, leather, and fresh tobacco. Full-bodied and plush, with a velvety texture, it offers supple tannins and good length through the finish. Seductive and open, with a pliant feel, it keeps good freshness throughout, but I would prefer to drink this in the near term.

The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino is earthy with a whiff of orange and savory herbs complicating crushed woodland berries. It’s soft textured and juicy in character with fleshy red berry fruits and tactile mineral tones that slowly drench the palate in primary concentration. The 2019 finishes with medium length, leaving edgy tannins and a bitter twang lingering.

Deep ruby with orange tinges. Brooding, closed and a tiny bit reduced on the nose and with a hint of cocoa powder. Supple, aromatic, sleek cherry fruit on the palate with gripping tannins. Grows on you. (WS)
