Crognolo 2022 Toscana Rosso IGT
Winemaker's Note
Crognolo, the first wine of Tenuta Sette Ponti, was born in 1998 from the wine project of the Moretti Cuseri family. An elegant Sangiovese-based Super Tuscan endowed with a unique identity between territory and vines, excellence, rigor, and innovation from an evolving tradition. The best selection of a historic variety of Sangiovese from a unique clone found in the Vigna dell'Impero 1935 and multiplied in the estate's Sangiovese vineyards. A small addition of Merlot for roundness and complexity. The ruby red color is a prelude to an intense and complex nose, rich in red fruits such as cherries and berries, floral notes such as violets, herbs, and spicy notes, giving class and elegance. Structured, complex, mineral, and round suggest excellent aging capabilities. The name comes from a wild plant, "the Cornus," that grows abundantly on the estate.

The organic Tenuta Sette Ponti 2022 Crognolo is a blend of [...] Sangiovese and [...] Merlot. The wine has a core of blackened fruit with plum and cooked blackberry, but it also shows varietal hints of Sangiovese, with pressed rose and sweet potting soil. It finishes with medium texture, some fruity freshness and more black fruit flavors. This wine [...] represents a selection of fruit from a historic clone of Sangiovese found here.

The 2022 Crognolo is a fine entry-level offering from Sette Ponti. Dark, vibrant and persistent, the 2022 races across the palate with dark-fleshed fruit, chocolate, licorice, cloves, menthol and licorice. I especially admire its energy. Grippy tannins support the finish nicely.

Black cherry, blackberry, lavender and spice aromas and flavors signal this dense red, which is tight and compact, yet has plenty of fruit and a well-integrated structure. Fine length. Sangiovese and Merlot. Best from 2026 through 2038.
