Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2019
Vineyard Details
Appellation: Amarone della Valpolicella D.O.C.G. Classico
Region: Veneto
Altitude: 450-520 meters above sea level (1,476-1,706 feet)
Exposure: Southeast
Soil: Varied, but mostly clay and chalk of volcanic origin
Training System: Guyot
Average Vine Age: 37 years
Density: 5,000 plants/ha
Harvest: By hand with selection of bunches; harvest began in mid-September and ended in mid-October, returning us to a more 'classic' harvest schedule than in recent years
Vintage Details
Overall, it was a vintage characterized by a mild winter. Temperatures fell below 0 degrees C on just a few nights in January, while peaks of 10 degrees C were recorded in early December and January. The soils were still 'workable,' so we took the opportunity to aerate them with superficial subsoil tilling. Between the end of March and the beginning of April, temperatures settled above 10 degrees C, and the vine's new vegetative cycle began. The absence of significant rainfall during budding considerably reduced the impact of downy mildew. The scenario changed abruptly in May with considerable wet weather and very low, practically winter-like temperatures. This situation conditioned the life cycle of all plants, not just vines. The real difference came with the summer, especially in our hillside and upper-hillside vineyards, where temperatures remained below 30-32 degrees C. This is why we expect wines with exceptional finesse and elegance.
Production
Blend: 45% Corvina, 45% Corvinone, 5% Rondinella, 5% Oseleta
Pre-Fermentation: Appassimento (drying process); naturally dried for 3-4 months in the drying facility, where the grapes lose 40-45% of their original weight.
Vinification: De-stemmed and soft-pressed in early January. Fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks at 8-22 degrees C (46-72 degrees F) for 25 days with daily pumping over.
Aging: 18 months in oak, blended and aged for 7 months.
Tasting Notes
The controlled drying (appassimento) of the harvested grapes, which lasts about one hundred days, brings great aromatic intensity of dark fruit and undergrowth, together with spicy and tobacco notes. The impact on the palate is powerful and vigorous, with the wine gradually tapering on the acidic and savory momentum, extending gently with a clean, dry finish.
Enjoyment
Pairing: Traditionally enjoyed with game, roasted, grilled meats, casseroles, and well-matured cheeses. Excellent with hearty dishes. Amarone's distinctive flavor complements sweet and sour cuisine and is also perfect with Asian and Middle Eastern dishes.
Temperature: Serve at 18 degrees C (64 degrees F) and open an hour before drinking.
Cellaring: Aging potential of more than 20 years.

From: Veneto: A Constant State of Evolution (Feb 2024)
The 2019 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is youthfully understated, requiring coaxing to reveal its depths of dried black cherries, mocha and cloves, all lifted by a hint of fresh mint. This impresses with its blend of sweet spices, opulent ripe wild berry fruits and silken textures, all balanced by brisk acidity and a pleasantly bitter tinge of dark chocolate toward the close. This finishes classically dry with dramatic length and potency, leaving a coating of fine-grained tannins that saturates, promising many years of positive evolution. Allegrini knocked this one out of the park. Wow.

A cooler, wetter vintage (2019), which has imbued this Amarone with a balsamic, leafy character while retaining plenty of concentration. Rich and vibrant, it opens with mint-chocolate, coffee and black pepper scents, while a background of woody tannins supports creamy black and purple fruits. Good acidity cuts the richness, and it finishes with some red and blue berries and a leafy note.

A modern interpretation of Amarone on one hand, yet dense, fresh and altitudinal of feel, brimming with the marrow of alpine herb and spruce sap, on the other. Bitter cocoa, espresso grind and the usual swathe of pithy, dried grape skin tannins, menthol and black licorice strap. Immense, powerful and fresh. I suppose that one can ask just how much of this can be drunk. On the other hand, a glass is impressive in the right moment. Drink or hold.

The Allegrini 2019 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico reverts to a classic profile for air-dried fruit made with appassimento. There are distant whiffs of candied cherry that give more lift and intensity to the bouquet that is otherwise characterized by heavier tones of black fruit, candied cherry, red licorice and sweet earth or potting soil. It finishes with a well-balanced full-bodied style (and a noticeable 16% alcohol content). The traditional blend is 45% Corvina Veronese, 45% Corvinone, 5% Rondinella and 5% Oseleta [...].

Aromas of plum and black cherry that give way to notes of black tea, violet and savory spices. The palate is well-balanced, highlighting both the fruit and non-fruit flavors equally. Black and red berries share the stage with notes of espresso, anise, dried leaf and limestone. Fine tannins and meaningful acidity make this wine a standout.

45% Corvina Veronese, 45% Corvinone, 5% Rondinella, 5% Oseleta. Grapes were handpicked in late September and dried 3-4 months, losing 40-45% of their weight. Fermented for 25 days in temperature-controlled stainless steel. Aged 18 months in barrel and 7 months in bottle.
Tasted blind. Medium ruby with a touch of garnet. Red cherry and walnut skin on the nose. Bone dry and lightly bitter, with chalky tannin and lively acidity. Quite long. (SCJ)
