Vineyard Notes
Temperatures were warmer than average beginning in the spring. At the end of May, flowering was fast and homogenous. In June and July, the warm temperatures led to a slow-growing season, which stopped early. Conditions were similar to those in the best vintages. In August, the rains were on time to complete the 'veraison' that had started by the end of July. In September, the difference in temperatures between cool nights and warm days, with the addition of brief rains, helped reach a perfect ripening. 2015 was a bright and cool year with ideal weather conditions, giving our wines wide aromatic potential with fine and round tannins.
Harvesting Notes
Berries were sound and healthy, and the maturity was there. Good timing for harvest is the key: not too early, not too late, not too ripe. We decided to harvest grapes when they would develop 'red berry' flavors, not 'blackberry' ones. Tannins had to be nicely ripe, alcohol content needed to be balanced and not too high, and acidity was to be tasted but not too high. Maybe all of that seems logical, but we know how lucky we have been to decide the ideal ripeness of our berries without constraint.

2015 Chateau Cantenac Brown (Margaux)
Points: 96
Opulent, lush, deep, dark, and concentrated, there is a wealth of ripe, dark plums, black cherries, blackberries, tobacco, espresso, cocoa, and flowers from start to finish. This is quite good now, but it is only going to improve from here. Drink from 2025-2050.

The 2015 Chateau Cantenac Brown is a total knockout and one of the finest values of the entire vintage. This gorgeous Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blend begins with striking aromas of dark berries, creme de cassis woven together with graphite, spring florals and traces of tobacco come together beautifully in the glass. This medium-full bodied red impresses with its wonderful structure along with outstanding depth and focus all leading up to the long polished finish. Jose Sanfins has certainly produced some incredible at Cantenac Brown, and the 2015 may be the best yet.

Distinct cigar box and tobacco leaf aromas leap from the glass, in which the wine's tone displays a hint of evolution, compared to more recent vintages tasted; this evolution is reflected in burgeoning tertiary aromatics that mingle with blackberry and blackcurrant fruit. One senses the large scale of the wine, like the 2018 vintage but more developed. 2015 is considered a great success in the Margaux appellation. While not as elegant as the 2016, this vintage conveys velvety, palate-enveloping tannins that please the senses.

Based on [...] Cabernet Sauvignon and [...] Merlot it offers an extraordinary nose of creme de cassis, caramelized cherries, flowers, and spices. This medium to full-bodied effort has plenty of tannins, as well as toasty oak, yet is perfectly balanced and has a great mix of both freshness and richness. It's a tour de force that will be drinkable in 4-5 years and last for 25-30 years!

The 2015 Cantenac Brown displays more red fruit compared directly with the 2016: raspberry and wild strawberry intermingled with 'sous-bois' and tobacco, violet aromas emerging with time. Lovely focus here, though not the panache of the following vintage. The palate is beginning to loosen up with lithe tannins, fleshy and harmonious, tart red cherries, allspice and clove with a grippy and quite persistent finish that lingers in the mouth. This is a wonderful Margaux that should drink a little earlier than the 2016. Tasted at the Cantenac Brown vertical at the chateau.

The 2015 Cantenac Brown is medium to deep garnet-purple in color with a nose of cherry cola, cassis and warm plums with touches of spice box and pencil shavings. The medium-bodied palate sports a lot of oak, with very firm and chewy tannins and a woody finish.
