2020 K King Coal Cabernet Sauvignon-Syrah
Tasting Notes by Winemaker Charles Smith
Dark, moonlit night with the mystery of a vast ocean. Black cherry entangled in fresh tobacco, cacao bean, wet rock, and dried thyme with strength, pushing forward the notes of savory compote and leather. Deeper than a crush.
Vintage Notes
The 2020 vintage might be the best we have ever had in Washington state history. We had an incredible growing season that was long and temperate, allowing the fruit to ripen evenly. The wines are focused, rich, complex, and lively. The reds are restrained and elegant yet powerful, with incredible tension and balance. Our white and rose wines are wonderfully rich on the palate but balanced with enough acid to make the wines complete. We are excited to see how these wines evolve!
Vineyard
Stoneridge Vineyard (100%). Alluvial fan gravel bed. The site rests above the floodplain of the Columbia River. Under the topsoil is a layer of caliche and basalt 6-12" deep, creating a calcium and iron-rich media that forces roots to struggle.

Mainly Cabernet Sauvignon with 24% Syrah, the 2020 King Coal Stoneridge Vineyard is firmer, darker and fresh with notes of pencil shavings and a juicy and generous core of spicy dark fruits, with delicate dusty red flowers, delightful brown baking spices and dark berries. Full-bodied, fresh and still tight, this will be released in September of 2023. Buy it, put it directly into your cellar, and forget about it for at least four years. It will go the distance; just be patient. [...] the wine aged in 60% new French oak for 22 months. Bravo!

One of the top wines in the vintage, the 2020 King Coal checks in as 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Syrah sourced all from the Stoneridge Vineyard in the Royal Slope region of the Columbia Valley. [...] Dried herbs, lead pencil, graphite, cassis, and spicy wood notes give way to a medium to full-bodied, seamless, silky, incredibly layered 2020 that has ripe, polished tannins, beautiful balance, and a great finish.

Meaty and dark-fruited with blackcurrants, peppercorns and charcuterie on the nose. Full-bodied, chewy and firm, with a deep and intense core. Turns to salted chocolate. Pulls you in for more. 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Syrah from Stoneridge Vineyard. Better from 2025.

Grilled herbs and a whiff of menthol give way to musky black currants as the 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon - Syrah King Coal comes to life in the glass. This is pure elegance on the palate, silky and polished yet finessed, with tart wild berry fruits accentuated by cooling acid and mineral tones. There's so much energy within, that its grippy tannins nearly slide by under the radar, as nuances of clove and salted licorice slowly taper off. This radiant beauty will pay dividends in the cellar.

Tightly wound at the moment, with a core of tannins and snappy acidity, this red is framed by currant, cherry and tobacco flavors that build tension on the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Drink now through 2030.
