Rare Millesime 2013
Winemaker's Note
Rare Millesime 2013 expresses the house's signature in two stages, blending minerality with a tropical twist. Despite its initially reserved appearance, this vintage unfurls delicious notes of pastries and spices in a saline tension that is both noble and full-bodied.
Elaboration
Blend: 70% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir
Location: 11 Crus, of which seven are classified as Grand Crus and three as Premier Crus
Chardonnay Crus: Villers-Marmery, Vaudemanges, Verzy, Ambonnay, Avize, Chouilly, Oger, Montgueux
Pinot Noir Crus: Verzy, Verzenay, Ambonnay, Bouzy, Tauxieres
Vinification: Full malolactic fermentation
Dosage: 9 g/L
Aging on Lees: 8 years minimum
Aging in Bottle: 1 year minimum
Aging Potential: Dazzling until 2040, resplendent thereafter
Vintage Conditions
Extreme weather. After a cold winter and spring punctuated by chaotic downpours, summer brought a mixture of sun, drought, and thunderstorms. In September, a chilly autumn exacerbated by strong winds forced the harvest to begin late in October.
To the Eye
Intensely bright. The effervescence of Rare Millesime 2013 is tinged with an intensely bright, light golden color.
On the Nose
Floral and spiced. The nose, at first subtle and clean, emerges in two stages, combining tonicity and elegance. It all begins with the delicacy of white flowers, a hint of black tea, and touches of citrus, kiwi, and kumquat. Then, notes of lime blossom, green tea, and fern give way to aromas of white fruits such as greengage plums. Touches of chestnut honey, sweet spices, vanilla, and marzipan round off the wine's rich bouquet.
On the Palate
Aromatic and smokey. The two facets of Rare Millesime 2013 are confirmed in the mouth: smooth and vibrant, indulgent and dynamic. Hints of meringue, whipped cream, marzipan, kumquat, blood orange, and kiwi provide a refreshing tonicity. On the finish, the comforting texture of Rare Millesime 2013 appears as an aromatic and smoky indulgence punctuated by freshness and a subtle bitterness. Rare Champagne's iconic signature of tropic minerality is expressed differently in Rare Millesime 2013, extended by a plump and prolonged aftertaste.
Food/Wine Pairing
Seafood platter. Roasted scallops, kumquats, and pomegranate with coriander, accompanied by an apple, lemon, and ginger jus. "Aguachile" seabass tartare, kiwi, cucumber. John Dory ceviche, pomegranate, olive oil, and lemon. Lentil dahl, minted yogurt. Lemon sorbet.

Originally a part of the legendary Piper-Heidsieck Champagne house, Rare is moving their Champagne Millesime to a new brand and want it to stand alone. (Think Delamotte and Salon.) The 13th vintage for this cuvee, the 2013 Champagne Millesime is a blend is 70% Chardonnay with the rest Pinot Noir [...]. A bright yellow hue, its aromatics are exquisite and well-balanced, with fresh notes of key lime, candied apple, fresh croissant dough, fresh pineapple, and honeysuckle. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the palate with a rounded and supple texture and a pillowy mousse. It’s long on the palate and has a silky personality as well as a long, pristine finish. It has fantastic balance of decadence and freshness, and I could drink this all day. It’s going to have a long drinking window. Drink 2024-2044 and beyond. [...]

The 2013 Brut Millesime, a blend of 70% Chardonnay and 30% Pinot Noir [...], spent eight years on lees. A gorgeous whiff of reductive smokiness precedes a sea breeze and hints of toasted nuts. The palate is a picture of tautness, filigree foam, finesse and svelte poise. This wine is wonderfully pure and bracing, with hints of caramelized hazelnuts and almonds teasingly in the background, gaining definition from an oystershell [sic] saltiness. The longer you pay attention, the more happens in this wonderfully nuanced and sophisticated wine. A joy. Dosage is 9 grams per liter. [...] - Anne Krebiehl MW

Initially cool and breezy on the nose, like sea spray and freshly sliced lemons. As it warms, it shows fresh pineapple, coconut, Sorrento lemons and a tiny touch of toast on the finish. This really is very youthful, taut and tingling, with very fine acidity. Lots of intrigue to come as it ages. 2013 was sunny in the early part of the season, but was also very cool. Harvest did not take place until October, the only time in the last 30 years that harvest has taken place in October. The grapes matured very slowly.

The 2013 Brut Cuvee Rare evokes a fresh and minty bouquet complemented by aromas of white fruit, notably pear and apple, spring flowers and gentle spices with a hint of citrus. With aeration, elegant pastry notes come to the fore. On the palate, this is a moderately weighted, tension-filled yet airy Champagne with bright acidity, indicative of a cool-weather vintage, and a delicately smoky finish. Although already thoroughly enjoyable, it should age well over the next 10 years.

Gold encrusted bottle 1,653 g. Certified B Corp is cited on the back label but few other details so I am indebted to London champagne specialist retailer The Finest Bubble for these details: 70% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir [...]. Chardonnay was from Avize, Oger, Villers-Marmery, Vaudemanges, Verzy, Ambonnay, Chouilly and Montgueux while the Pinot Noir was from Verzy, Verzenay, Ambonnay, Bouzy and Tauxieres. Aged for 8 years on lees and [...] with a dosage of 9 g/l.
Still with very marked acidity. Very obviously Chardonnay-dominated with lemon-cream notes. Tight finish. I'm tasting it straight out of the fridge and I'll definitely keep it out of the fridge until our guests arrive. Mind you, in London tonight even indoors is pretty chilly. Still very dominated by 2013's tightly wound character. (JR)
