The nose starts hot and smoky, like a cowboy's dinner, before morning comes with gentler aromas of leather, coffee and soil, all above a plum undertone. The pepper returns on the palate, and is accentuated by tight yet polished tannins, but enduring dark fruit leads into a chocolaty finish.

Like chiseling through an ashen stone to find a core of black raspberry preserves, balsamic spice and dried roses, the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Montosoli makes itself known. It glides across the palate with a stimulating mix of mineral-tinged wild berries and savory herbs contrasted by a hint of spiced citrus. This tapers off with a lingering concentration of fruit and framing tannins, as violet inner florals slowly fade. The Montosoli is powerful and built for the cellar, yet radiant as well. Very nice.

I like the orange zest lift underlining raspberries, sour cherries, earth, bay leaf and truffle complexity. Sandalwood and button mushroom, too. Complex, with a full body and firm, fine-grained tannins. Rich yet vibrant. Drink after 2023.

Designation: Vigna Montosoli
Appellation: Brunello di Montalcino
Tasting Note: Earthy aromas recalling new leather, violet and damp forest floor come to the forefront along with ripe black-skinned fruit and tobacco. Full-bodied and concentrated, the palate doles out mature plum, fleshy black cherry, baking spice and salted game framed in velvety, enveloping tannins. Thanks to the generous fruit, you won’t detect the hefty alcohol content. Drink through 2030.

The palate is more interesting than the nose of the 2018 Brunello Di Montalcino Vigna Montosoli. It is a bit more reserved aromatically than its sibling, it still has the same profile but is more structured and has gripping tannins as well as notes of orange oil, red cherry, ripe fruit, and tea leaf. Drink 2024-2030.

Lustrous mid ruby with a little bit of development. Cherry and damson, but amplified and with heightened complexity compared with the classic Brunello and still compact. Hints of cigar box and a suggestion of cinnamon. Elegant, succulent and focused on the palate with gripping, crunchy tannins. A finely balanced whole [...]. (WS)
