2022 One Point Five Cabernet Sauvignon
Background
We named this wine to honor the incredible founding partnership at the heart of Shafer Vineyards. After purchasing our estate in 1973, John Shafer launched the Shafer brand with our first wine, the 1978 Cabernet Sauvignon. He began to sell that wine in 1981. In January 1983, his son, Doug Shafer, joined the family enterprise as winemaker. They always said they learned the wine business together, a father and son working side by side. Rather than having a typical second-generation story, John and Doug said their story was a "generation and a half." From that, we coined the name One Point Five. One Point Five is our signature Cabernet Sauvignon, reflecting the timeless elegance of our Napa Valley vineyards.
Vineyard
Shafer's "Borderline" estate vineyard, located in Stags Leap District, and other pristine, selected Napa Valley sites.
Vintage
The long, sunny 2022 summer created an idyllic growing season. The fruit developed a rich color with clean, elegant, pure aromas and flavors.

Tasting Notes
True to its pedigree, 2022 One Point Five finds an elegant balance between liveliness and complexity with plush, round aromas of dark fruit and herbs followed by a mouth-filling blend of red plum, briar fruit, black cherry, coffee, sage, and cassis. You can almost taste the warm days and cool nights of this vintage that come wrapped in soft, ripe tannins and a long, complete finish.

Dripping ripe plums and other dark fruits are spun through with aromas of cracked pine and pitch for a complex Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa icon, Shafer Vineyards. Succulent and mouthwatering with melting tannins and a persistent finish, this is a wine with plenty of potential to age.

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five is based on 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Petite [sic] Verdot, 3% Merlot, and 2% Malbec that was bottled in May of 2024. Tons of juicy red and black berries, incense, new leather, and spicy notes all define the aromatics, and it's medium to full-bodied, has a juicy, elegant mouthfeel, good richness, and outstanding length.

While the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five includes some purchased fruit, the aim is for it to become fully estate once new plantings come into production. It's an incrementally richer, darker and more concentrated wine than Shafer's TD-9, with black cherries wrapped in a subtle cloak of almost ephemeral cedar and vanilla. Full-bodied and velvety textured, with a lingering finish, it should drink well for at least 15 years.

This bottling brings a slightly lighter aromatic touch to the Shafer reds, with its red cherry and strawberry aromas over a very full body. Broad, ripe and generous red fruit is wrapped in moderate tannins for good structure and some aging potential. Drink or hold.

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five is a gorgeous wine in this challenging vintage. Soft, silky and expressive, the 2022 offers tons of appeal in a mid-weight style that is all charm. Dark-toned fruit, leather, cedar and blood orange all meld together. This is impeccably done.

Plump and open-knit, with a friendly gush of plum sauce and boysenberry compote flavors coated with sweet toast and licorice on the finish. A subtle graphite edge gives just enough form for balance. Drink now through 2034.
