Les Hauts De Barville Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2016
Wine Details
Appellation: Chateauneuf-du-Pape Controlee
Varieties: Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre
Yield: 30 hl/ha
History and The Vineyard
Having long-time expertise in the appellation of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, the Brotte House knows very well the terroirs of the area. "Les Hauts de Barville" has distinctive richness and unctuosity, in the same style as "Domaine Barville," which is the Brotte family's estate wine named after their ancestors, the Barville. We select several varieties from the best-exposed terroirs of pebbles, limestone, and sand of the prestigious cru of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The selection gives this great wine beautiful concentration, a rich symphony of aromatic notes of red fruits (strawberry), spices, truffles, and "garrigue" (scrub land). A patient maturation in 100-year-old large oak casks and French oak barrels for one year helps to develop smoothness, rich aromas, and tannins.
Vinification Notes
Sustainable viticulture, de-budding, de-leafing, and green harvest limit the yield and increase the quality. Hand-picking, de-stemming, and gentle crushing are followed by a controlled fermentation at 28 degrees C, and a 3- to 4-week maceration. The tannic Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre are aged in French oak barrels, while the softer Grenache is matured in concrete vats and 100-year-old large oak casks to preserve the fruit. Bottling takes place in November, after a year of ageing and a light filtering.
Sensory Details
Colour: Ruby with purple glints
Nose: Rich symphony of red fruits (strawberry dominates), spices, truffles, and garrigue
Palate: Rich and unctuous with long-lasting aromas of red fruits and spices; the cuvee will seduce in its youth, but ageing the wine (up to 10 years) will allow you to savour its full potential and unique truffles and garrigue notes.
Serving Suggestions
Serve at 17 degrees C. Open 4 hours in advance.
Savour with beef in black olives sauce, grilled rib steak in pepper sauce, beef and vegetable stew, fresh goat cheeses, and chocolate.
The 2016 Vintage
An exceptional year. The reds are aromatic, powerful, round, fine, and balanced, while the whites display freshness, unctuosity, full body, and great length.

Lovely, with crushed plum and raspberry fruit that is ripe but fresh and racy in feel, lined with subtle violet, garrigue and singed apple wood notes. Shows a mouthwatering swath of tobacco and warm stone accents through the finish. Best from 2020 through 2030. -JM

Starting off the 2016 reds, the 2016 Chateauneuf-du-Pape Hauts de Barville is a blend of 70% Grenache and the balance equal parts Mourvedre and Syrah, aged in barrels (10% new) and concrete tanks. Blackberries, roasted herbs, hints of minerality and licorice all give way to a tight, concentrated barrel sample that has good acidity and notable tannin. It has lots of potential and should be more expressive from bottle.

Red wine from France
Bright ruby. Black raspberry, cherry pit, licorice and pungent flowers on the nose. Bitter cherry and dark berry flavors unfold slowly and pick up a peppery quality that adds back-end spiciness. Gentle tannins frame the clinging finish, which hangs on with very good, dark-berry-tinged persistence. -Josh Raynolds. Tasting date: April 2018

70% Grenache, 15% Mourvedre, 15% Syrah. Cask sample.
Leathery nose with some violet aromas and dense, dark black fruit. Pretty tough and taut. Finishes with slight clove spiciness. (RH)
