With their 'Odoardo Beccari' line of wines, Tuscan producer Vignavecchia proves that classics never go out of style. Their 2014 Gran Selezione Chianti Classico showcases the Old World style that is lauded by red wine lovers the world over, with a splash of Canaiolo adding soft robustness to Sangiovese's firm tannins and vibrant acidity. A time-honored palate of tart berries, toasted spice, bitter herbs, and just a hint of earthy smokiness makes this Italian offering a lovely accompaniment to hand-rolled pasta tossed in a creamy roasted red pepper sauce.

Definitely shows the wild side of Sangiovese, revealing iron, sanguine, leather and wild herb aromas and flavors allied to a sinewy frame. Intense and smoky, with a finish defined by vivid acidity. Best from 2023 through 2042. -BS

The 2014 Chianti Classico Riserva Vigneto Odoardo Beccari is powerful, but also clenched and in need of more bottle age to be at its best. Grilled herb, licorice, tobacco and leather notes are nicely delineated in a Riserva that offers lovely savoriness to match its dark shades of fruit [...]. -Antonio Galloni. Tasting date: July 2018

Vignavecchia's Gran Selezione pays tribute to botanist and explorer Odoardo Beccari, who took over the family property at the end of the 19th century. It is crafted from a 2ha vineyard in Radda-in-Chianti situated at an altitude of 450 metres, and is aged in a combination of large barrels and barriques. Slight touches of macerated cherry, earth and heather are combined with a juicy undertow. This is neither overdone nor overly complex, but is balanced and characterful. Drinking Window 2018-2024

Radda in Chianti. 90% Sangiovese, 10% Canaiolo.
Maturing ruby with bricky rim. Ripe, sweet fruit with smoked-bacon hints, but lifts with aeration. Lively red-fruit palate with lovely bite and crunch on the finish. Ready now. (WS)
