Le Gode 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva
Points: 96+
Montalcino, Tuscany
Red wine from Italy
Drinking window: 2023 - 2033
Deep red. The intensely perfumed nose of violet and blueberries is fragrant and fresh and very typical of the Montosoli area of Montalcino. Then broad, dense and savory, featuring a tarry element on the long back end and noteworthy insidious sweetness. Knockout stuff from a very underrated Montalcino producer that owns Sangiovese wines in Montosoli, the most famous cru of all Montalcino and one of its two or three best sites for the variety. Guess what? Terroir matters. -Ian D'Agata. Tasting date: February 2018

Enticing aromas of new leather, fragrant purple flower, underbrush, steeped plum and balsamic notes mingle with a whiff of scorched earth. On the succulent full-bodied palate, velvety tannins provide a firm but elegant backbone for dried wild cherry, black raspberry, licorice and tobacco. The juicy, chewy fruit flavors seamlessly support the warmth of alcohol.

Very rich aromas of ripe fruit and caramel with cedar and tobacco. Full-bodied, deep and layered with fruit-forward, toasted-oak undertones. Needs time to come together. Try in 2020.

[...] it might prove difficult to get your hands on Le Gode's 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva. This is a powerful Brunello that shows deep inner strength and muscle. The wine also shows lots of dark ripe fruit that is sticky and jammy in places. Blackberry confit and blueberry marmalade give the wine a sweet and succulent side. Smoke, tar and barbecue spice appear lavishly on the finish. The wine comes close to tasting too ripe (for my palate), and I'm not sure how this will play out during its future evolution. For that reason, I am suggesting a conservative drinking window.

Mid to deep ruby with orange tinges. Heady strawberry and cherry-liqueur nose. Super-charged sweet fruit with a candied edge. Rich, generous and rather sweet. (WS)
