History and Terroir
Located three miles from the historic village of Saint-Emilion, Vieux Chateau des Combes is a winery that was originally a Benedictine abbey that dated back to the 17th century. Today the surrounding vineyards total 31 hectares and are planted with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. (For the 2015 cuvee, Merlot and Cabernet Franc were blended). The vines, which are 30-years-old, sit in the rich clay/limestone soils that the Saint-Emilion plateau is known for.

Production
When the grapes are at their optimum ripeness for harvesting, the process is done by hand, as is the sorting of the grapes before crush. After the wine has been macerated and fermented, it is transferred to oak barrels for 12 months for further aging before going into the bottle to age at least another year. The results of these efforts is a wine that has structure and firm tannins. The flavors are layered with dark chocolate, dark plum, and berry.

Vineyards on the site of a monastery and east of the town of Saint-Emilion have produced a richly tannic and structured wine. It is firm, textured and concentrated. Dark chocolate as well as black-plum flavors give the wine its serious richness. It needs time; drink from 2024.
