En Pierrelet 2017 Mercurey Blanc
Terroir
Plot: 'En Pierrelet' planted in 1990, located right behind the Chateau de Chamirey
Area: 2.9670 hectares, only one hectare in the heart of the vineyard produces this cuvee
Soil: Smooth terraced mix of clay and limestone with a limestone predominance. Huge concentration of small white stones on the surface. Southeast facing.
Winemaking
To preserve their integrity, grapes are carefully harvested and sorted out by hand. Full clusters. Following the pneumatic press, juices stay in a vat overnight for a cool settling down and are then directly filled in barrels by gravity.
Aging
Fermentation and aging take place in 100% traditional Burgundian 228-liter barrels and 400-liter barrels for 11 months, with around 10% new barrels. We only use light toasted French oak coming mainly from Bourgogne, Allier, and Vosges forests. Light filtration before bottling.
Tasting Notes
Eye: Bright yellow color with green tints
Nose: Powerful and intense. It develops citrus aromas with white pepper and ivy leaf notes.
Palate: Ample and structured, great volume. Mineral and long-lasting finish.
Service and Cellaring
It can be served from now, at 12-14 degrees C, or kept in cellar for ten to 15 years.
Food and Wine Pairing
Seafood platter, tuna tartar, or risotto with ceps will be a tasty companion to our Mercurey 'En Pierrelet' 2017. It can match with Brillat-Savarin too.

Faint aromas of melon flash before the shyness on the nose returns. The palate of this wine convinces with its concentration, gentle texture and brightness. There are tender echoes of toasty oak but freshness gets center stage.

The 2017 Mercurey En Pierrelet Blanc is also showing very well, offering up aromas of ripe citrus fruits, pear, white flowers and almond paste. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and enveloping, with a textural attack that segues into a bright, precise mid-palate and finish. This is an excellent white that exemplifies the progress the Chateau de Chamirey has made.

Producer note: Amaury de Villard succinctly noted that "we produced less volume in white in 2017 than we did in 2016, and we didn't produce much in 2016 either! It was not especially copious in red either as there was a lot of millerandage (shot berries). The quality however is actually quite good and in both colors. As to the wines, they're fresh and delicious and should be approachable young."

Tasting note: While the nose was firmly reduced there is both better density and intensity to the relatively powerful mouth coating flavors that exhibit good minerality on the citrusy, dry and focused finish where a touch of bitter lemon surfaces. This is a bit more structured but even so a wine that should be approachable on the younger side.

Cask sample. Smoky, spicy aromas with ripe apple and toffee character – appreciably denser and more complex than their village Mercurey. Lovely long, floral finish. (RH)
