Patrimony 2016
Wine Description
A California first-growth Cabernet Sauvignon without peer, fulfilling the Adelaida District's destiny as the world's next benchmark for Bordeaux varieties.
Vintage
If there were ever a perfect vintage, 2016 would be it. Bud break started in early March, and the warmth set in very quickly. The onset of veraison came rapidly and earlier than normal because of a very warm June and July. There were a few scares because of the raging fires throughout the region, but fortunately, our grapes were unaffected. In August, approximately one week from harvest, very cold weather set in, and the sugars stopped accumulating for several weeks allowing the perfect hang time to occur. The 2016 vintage allowed us to make our darkest, most concentrated wines yet. The longer hang time led to supple and very well-integrated tannins. The 2016 wines will be long-lived.
Viticulture and Vinification
Patrimony is rooted in the unrivaled terroir of Daou Mountain. The phenolics produced on this mountain are known to be among the highest in the world, fostering an immensity of color, depth, and structure. To extract the purest and most elevated expression of this terroir, purposeful omission is required. For this reason, only select vineyard rows are chosen for Patrimony cultivation. When the fruit is aggressively thinned, optically sorted, and used only for its free-run juice, a minimal percentage of the total potential yield meets the exacting standard we set for Patrimony. Fermentation proceeds exclusively with wild yeasts cultured from Daou Mountain, imbuing the wine with native texture and character.
Barriques
The Patrimony aging program is built around the most coveted barrels accessible only through personal relationships with top cooperages. These barrels are Taransaud T5 barrels coopered from five-year seasoned staves cut from centuries-old Troncais forest trees, the Serie Vieux Morat Sylvain collection barrels made from 39-meter tall sessile oak that is approximately 350 years old, a proprietary Daou barrel created from rare, super fine-grain pink oak, or Bois rose, also seasoned in the elements for five years, Seguin Moreau's Icone concept, whose technology allows even flavors throughout the barrels, and Berger barrels, who customized a special toast for our fruit. Collectively, these barrels provide for seamless oak integration and staggering complexity over a maturation period of 30 months, all without infringing upon the pure qualities of our Daou Mountain fruit. The result is the purest expression of the Cabernet Sauvignon grape - abundantly layered, extravagant, in-depth, and intricately poised to the end.
Tasting Notes
A massive yet elegant expression of our terroir, the Patrimony 2016 is a deep purple-black wine that delivers the full experience from beginning to end. On the nose, it profoundly exhibits floral characteristics that include creme de cassis, violets, espresso roast, truffles, and chocolate. This wine is tremendously concentrated with extremely high phenolics, often referred to by Daniel Daou as a "rare phenomenon." On the palate, it is very savory and includes notes of black fruit preserves, licorice, cooked blueberries, spice box, and cigar box. Additional creme de cassis and chocolate notes accompany this full-bodied wine with a firm tannin structure that delivers a very long finish. While muscular, it is elegant and balanced, delivering great pleasure and complexity. Built for the long haul, it should be laid down for several years before being consumed.

The 2016 Patrimony is made of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and aged 30 months in 100% new French oak. It has a deep purple-black color and explosive, unbelievably layered nose of lilacs, violets, vanilla, espresso, rooibos tea leaves, underbrush and cinnamon stick aromas mingling over a core of blueberry compote, blackberry pie, black cherry preserves and pure blackcurrant fruit with an undercurrent of iron and graphite. The medium to full-bodied palate gives up stunningly explosive flavor layers. It has an unbelievably ripe, pixelated frame and fantastic juiciness, finishing very long, lifted and layered. This is stunning.

Bright purple. Sexy, expansive aromas of dark berry preserves, cherry-cola, cured tobacco, smoky oak and vanilla are complemented by exotic spice and floral topnotes. Smooth, broad, alluringly sweet cassis, cherry and floral pastille flavors show outstanding depth and energy, with a suave spicecake note emerging with aeration. The cherry and floral notes resonate on a wonderfully long, seamless finish that features youthful tannins and lingering spiciness. (aged in new French oak barrels for 30 months)

Deep and darkly hued in the glass while rich and intense but still balanced on the nose, this luxury-level bottling by the Daou brothers begins with aromas of blackberry, wood spice, lilac, cola and char on the nose. Lavish, expertly polished tannins frame the sip, where rich flavors of cassis, toast and coffee extract are powerful yet refined.

Very dark ruby red. Compared to the 2017, this Patrimony is more ethereal with aromas and flavors of black raspberry, cassis, graphite and a hint of bitter chocolate. It's mouth filling and pure with an uncanny combination of energy and elegance. The aftertaste is exceptionally persistent with firm tannins. The patient wine lover should give this more time in cellar. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged 30 months in 100% new French oak; 15.2% alc.

A firm, racy red with blackberry, blueberry and dark-chocolate character. Solid tannins. Very pretty and long. This is a plush, yet a reserved red for the area. Drink now or hold.
