By Chateau Haut-Marbuzet
2019 Saint-Estephe
Producer Notes
In 1770, the Marbuzet vineyards were part of the considerable estate Sylvester Fatin left for his two daughters. In 1825, the vineyards became the property of the MacCarthy family, descendants of Irish Jacobean emigrants. In 1848, due to a serious crisis concerning succession, the MacCarthy heirs sold the estate in parcels. In 1952, Herve Duboscq became the owner of a plot of seven hectares called Chateau Haut-Marbuzet. He resurrected the vineyard, giving rise to a wine of its own style, immediately charming many experts. In 1962, his son Henri joined him to help reach his goal - one precious to the Duboscqs: The "glory of Haut-Marbuzet." After buying the neighboring vineyards and pockets that were originally the result of MacCarthy's parceling out, the vineyard attained an area of 66 hectares in 2005. At the same time, the Duboscqs then bought the chateaux Chambert-Marbuzet, Tour de Marbuzet, and MacCarthy. All three are crus Bourgeois of Saint-Estephe.
The Vineyard
The Chateau Haut-Marbuzet faces the Gironde estuary and - as its name indicates - is located in Marbuzet, a hillside long renowned for the quality wines it produces. The vineyard rests on a marvelous ridge of gravel, clayey, and calcareous soil, with veins of iron found in reduced form. It has an area of 66 hectares, of which Merlot constitutes 55%, Cabernet Franc 5%, Petit Verdot 5%, and Cabernet Sauvignon 35%. The average age of the vineyard is 30 years.
Winemaking
Manually harvested in search for optimum ripeness. After being destalked and crushed, the grapes are macerated for four weeks with daily pumping-over. Because the wine is matured in new oak barrels for each vintage, the Chateau Haut-Marbuzet adds a fragrant mellowness to tame the traditional aggressiveness characterizing wines from Saint-Estephe. Thus, it is already enchanting when initially bottled. With age, it attains the peaks of its subtlety due to the special character of the soil.

Black and blue fruit, walnuts, gravy, vanilla, praline and cigar box on the nose. Full-bodied with fine tannins. Balanced, layered and polished with a fleshy texture. Harmonious, with elegance and intensity. Beautiful finish. Wow. Drink from 2025.

The 2019 Haut-Marbuzet is fabulous. In fact, the 2019 is one of the best recent vintages I can remember tasting. There is an energy to the 2019, a feeling of vibrancy, that is compelling. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry fruit, mint, chalk and blood orange are lifted by bright acids and veins of tannin that need time to fully integrate. The 2019 is seriously impressive, to say the least.

The 2019 Haut-Marbuzet has turned out very nicely indeed, offering up a deep bouquet of berry fruit, loamy soil, forest floor and spices. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, it's deep and concentrated, with a fleshy core of fruit that's framed by ripe, powdery tannins and succulent acids. Already persuasively seamless and integrated, and much less marked by its new oak than was the case for this chateau a decade ago, this is well worth seeking out.

2019 Chateau Haut-Marbuzet (St. Estephe)
Points: 93
There is a strong oaky note on the nose, which is the first thing you notice until you begin to dig into all of its spicy, savory-tinged, red fruits, citrus and wet earthy nuances. Lush, round and richly textured, the medium-bodied wine shows a plush, polished, fresh, sweet, vibrant cherry character that shines brightly on the mid-palate and in the finish. Drink from 2025-2037.

Lovely fragranced nose, heady perfumed, full. This has a silky texture, smooth and driven with vibrant energy and a coolness to the fruit profile, blueberries and cherries with some definite liquorice spicing. The overall frame is dense and still knitted down right now. You can feel that this has underlying power but it's still well balanced and integrated at this stage with a lovely freshness. Great potential for ageing.

Tasted blind. Looks quite evolved. Fresh, perky, energetic nose. Dense and rich and much riper than the average Medoc. Good effort, with no shortage of tannin underneath. A promising package! Even if a tad chunky in terms of tannins. (JR)
