2017 Barolo Bussia
Winemaking Notes
The grapes for this wine come from South and South-west facing vineyards between five and 18 years old, at approximately 328 to 383 yards in altitude. The terroir is marly, white tufa in the Visette (Bussia) area, near the village of Monforte d'Alba. Maceration on skins takes place over ten days at controlled temperatures, with natural fermentation using native yeasts. The wine is aged in large Slavonian oak barrels for 36 months, with further aging of six months in the bottle at a controlled temperature.
Technical Details
Grape Variety: 100% Nebbiolo

Total Acidity: 6.18 g/L
Residual Sugar: 0.54 g/L
Tasting Notes
Ruby-red, almost garnet color. A flowery, rich, expansive nose. The taste is well-balanced, mature, deep, and tannic, with a long finish. This wine is excellent for drinking from an early age. A great accompaniment to roasts, game, truffle-flavored dishes, or mature cheeses.

Forthcoming aromas of rose, cherry and licorice are the hallmarks of this supple red. Bright and well defined, with notes of tobacco, cut hay and tar adding detail. Solidly built, this should develop nicely over the next two decades. Best from 2024 through 2043.

Young Barolo can be a chore to taste - the acidity levels are generally in the “don’t tell your dentist you’re doing this” zone - but it’s a worthy endeavor. In this case, rustic style is a benefit, with earth and tea notes joining the blueberry and cherry fruit. After two hours in a decanter this is just starting to loosen up, though the ripeness level helps with early approachability. I would start with a ten-year hold on this, or decant for at least a day if you need to go in early.

A camphor-like aroma mingles with forest floor, blue flowers and botanical herbs. Elegantly structured, the full-bodied palate features ripe Morello cherry, strawberry compote, star anise and tobacco framed in firm, fine-grained tannins. Drink 2027 - 2032.

This is very clear and refined with dark-berry, candied-citrus and mineral undertones on both the nose and palate. It’s medium-bodied. Bright and fresh at the end. Tight and fine tannin texture. Try after 2023.
