94 Pt. Château La Couspaude Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé 2018

Chateau La Couspaude was designated a Grand Cru Classe estate in the 1955 Saint-Emilion classification and today retains that status while serving as a jewel among the Aubert family's holdings. The 2018 growing season delivered concentrated, firmly-structured wines like their Merlot-dominant right bank bottling, already hedonistic yet suitable for medium-term cellaring. Tasting Notes
Chateau La Couspaude's 2018 Saint-Emilion Grand Cru is simply compelling. The nose is filled with tempting notes of reduced fruits like blacks plums and boysenberries accented by whispers of chocolate, licorice, and truffle. The palate is medium to full body, firm yet polished tannins, black fruit preserve, and spicy layers that slide into a long, flavorful finish.

Vintage
The 2018 growing season had a challenging start. In its first half, the region was met with incredibly wet conditions. However, from mid-July through harvest, the vineyards bathed in hot, sunny weather. This allowed winemakers to pick their fruit whenever they felt they had achieved their expectations. Later-picked fruit created more tannic, richer wines, while the earlier fruit created fresher and slightly lighter cuvees. This vintage is full of diverse character and style yet doesn't stray from quality one bit. This year produced excellent wines "from the simplest Bordeaux to the great names. This is a sign of an exceptional year." (James Suckling)

Vinification
This 7-hectare single-vineyard, magnificently located on the heights of the plateau of Saint-Emilion, is entirely walled, distinguishing it as one of the oldest properties in the village. After the 30-year-old grapes are hand-harvested from the vineyard of clay-limestone soils, they enter a traditional winemaking process before being placed in new French oak barrels for the next 18 months.

Estate
Chateau La Couspaude is the physical representation of the integration of both the Aubert and Robin families. It all started more than a century ago, when Posper-Jean Robin (1848-1930), owner of Sansonnet, acquired an ideally-located estate at the entrance of Saint-Emilion, now known as Chateau La Couspaude. Edith Robin, Posper-Jean's granddaughter, inherited the estate. In 1941, she married Etienne Aubert, whose family of winemakers dated back to the middle of the 18th century. Today, Posper-Jean's great-grandsons Alain, Daniel, and Jean-Claude Aubert, are now the heart of Chateau La Couspaude. The brothers create wines that not only echo the legacy of the estate but the soul of their family as well.

The vineyard, on the edge of Saint-Emilion city, has produced a juicy, well-structured wine. Restrained tannins back up ripe black-currant fruitiness. An attractive smoky perfume from rich Cabernet Franc in the blend enhances complexity and density. Drink the wine from 2026.

Another rich, powerful Saint-Emilion, the 2018 Chateau La Couspaude sports a dense purple/plum color as well as a rocking nose of black cherries, wild herbs, iron, tapenade, and spicy oak. Rich, full-bodied, and concentrated on the palate, it has an expansive mouthfeel, terrific mid-palate depth, and a great finish. It needs 2-4 years of bottle age to shed some oak, but this is a beautiful, layered, hedonistic 2018 with loads to love.

Blackberries, blueberries and violets. Dark-purple fruit. It’s full-bodied with very polished tannins that are beautiful and very intense. Chewy and creamy. Needs time to open. A little tight now. Give it time to open. Try after 2024.

Round, fat, fruity, oaky and smoky, with loads of espresso, licorice, chocolate and black cherries. The wine is forward, leaving you with a solid layer of ripe, sweet, black cherries.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 La Couspaude is a touch closed to begin, offering glimpses at stewed plums, fruitcake and mulberries at the core, with underlying cedar, charcuterie and woodsmoke scents. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers a refreshing line and faintly chewy tannins with just enough black fruit and a savory finish.

The 2018 La Couspaude has a simple nose of raspberry, dark cherry and boysenberry fruit, becoming quite floral in style but missing real delineation. The heady palate is sweet and candied on the entry, quite extracted in style, with a finish driven by wood tannins instead of fruit.

Barrel sample. Black core, almost no rim. Inviting nose of fresh cassis and crushed stones. Juicy – the first time I have written that word so far today – and lively. Plenty of tannin but it’s not thick, more paper-layered. Juicy and fresh on the finish. (JH)

There’s something so cozy and enchanting about sitting in the warmth of your home, a fireplace beside you, the snowy landscape in view, and a wonderful glass of wine in hand.
