Tasting Notes
Domaine du Grand Tinel's 2019 Chateauneuf-du-Pape has a nose full of violet and leather-spiced cassis. The oak is balanced with a creamy mouthfeel, a perfect example of sleek charm. A rich experience that will only get better with time.

Vintage
The 2019 Rhone Valley vintage challenged its winemakers. The mild winter continued into a dry spring, leading to an early bud break. It was then met with an unexpected cold snap and a strikingly hot summer. However, they were able to pass Mother Nature's tests with such a concentrated, balanced, and refreshing cuvee.

Terroir
Grand Tinel's Chateauneuf-du-Pape comes from two neighboring sectors in the famous Cru du Rhone (La Gardiole and Palestor) and is produced with the help of Philippe Cambie (named 2010 Robert Parker winemaker of the year). It is a primarily Grenache blend from 70-year-old vines with roots deep in clay-limestone soils, covered with the famous 'galets roules' stones. In the appellation's northern part, iron-rich soils contribute to harmonious elegance, fresh mineral definition, and the powerful structure of classic Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Grenache, the main component, delivers a rich fruit presence, on the one hand silky, fine, and elegant yet at the same time concentrated and powerful. Syrah brings aromatic complexity to the table with density and good tannins.

History
The Jeune family is a longstanding and well-known dynasty of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, tracing back to the 14th century. Christiane Establet, with Pierre Elie Jeune in the 1960s, united the properties of two venerable families, establishing Domaine du Grand Tinel, one of the largest estates in the appellation. The inspiration for the name Tinel comes from the Latin for 'cask.' Today, Christophe Jeune and his two sisters, Beatrice and Isabelle, carry the tradition of producing traditional-style Chateauneuf in a family-run affair.

The classic 2019 Chateauneuf Du Pape (55% Grenache and 45% Syrah) reveals a dense purple hue as well as a terrific sense of freshness and purity in its darker berry fruits, peppery herbs, leather, and violet aromas and flavors. Showing lots of Syrah character, it's medium to full-bodied and has ripe tannins, some gamey, bloody, iron-like nuances, and a great finish. It's a stunning base wine.

With a strong floral note the wine opens with soft-textured, sweet cherries, wild peppery strawberries and hints or black raspberry and mildly chalky tannins. This is quite refined and energetic. Plus it has the ability to age and evolve quite nicely. The wine blends Grenache with healthy dose of Syrah. Drink from 2023 - 2036

[...] this lip smackingly fruity, luminous blend of Grenache and Syrah puts sun-drenched raspberry and boysenberry flavors on center stage. Ample and silken on the palate yet anchored by fine, softly gripping tannins, it's an immediately enjoyable red with a smoky, sweet spice finish. At peak now - 2028 but likely to hold further still.

Opaque ruby. Spice- and smoke-accented dark berries, cherry preserves and licorice on the nose, along with suggestions of succulent herbs and violets. Palate-coating blackberry, bitter cherry and floral pastille flavors show very good focus and become livelier with air. The floral note drives the clinging, energetic finish, which is shaped by steadily building tannins.

Grand Tinel's 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape - a blend of 55% Grenache and 45% Syrah, aged mainly in foudres - features gently herbal aromas (oregano, thyme), but also some decent blackberry fruit. It's medium to full-bodied, without much tannin, concentration or length, but it's charming, cleanly made and easy to drink.

Cask sample. Tasted blind. Violet and leather-spiced cassis cedar nose. Oak is prominent and supported by a creamy mouthfeel - showy and sleek but has real charm somewhere beneath. Well-proportioned rich wine. Lovely. (AC)
