The nose balances the subtle sweetness of dried cherries, figs and hibiscus with savory aromas of mixed herbs and damp soil. On the palate, a pomegranate current lifts more concentrated notes of cherry and fig, and citrus notes add energy. Tannins form a solid, tensile foundation.

The aromas of black and red cherries with fresh flowers are persuasive. Medium-bodied with medium-juicy tannins and a firm and creamy finish. Tangy at the end. Very drinkable now but can improve for another three to five years.
Score: 91

Appellation: Brunello di Montalcino
Tasting Note: Aromas recalling damp forest floor, new leather and graphite mingle with violet on the earthy 2019 Brunello from Abbadia Ardenga. On the rounded, full-bodied palate, dusty, drying tannins wrap around plum, tobacco and blood orange before closing on notes of bitter almond and coffee bean.

Garnet/ruby in color, the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino takes on aromas of dried red cherries, leather, dried herbs, and tobacco leaf, but it’s also quite volatile with the aroma of bug spray. Medium-bodied, it’s hot on the palate, with ripe tannins, and retains good freshness of acidity. Drink 2024-2028.

The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino lifts from the glass with an inviting blend of mentholated herbs, foreign spices and dried strawberries. This is soft and round with a juicy feel as violet-laced wild berry fruits flow across a core of zesty acidity. It tapers off with tension, spicy and mouth watering, framed by ridged tannins.

Deep ruby with bricky rim. Concentrated and balsamic rather than fruit-driven nose. A much lighter palate than the nose would have it. While it isn’t short of acidity the fruit is losing its lustre rather quickly. (WS)
