By Chateau Latour
2017 Pauillac
2017 Vintage
Following a cold and dry winter, mild weather in March led to bud break occurring near the normal time, on 29th March for the Merlot and 3rd April for the Cabernet Sauvignon. Significant differences in day and night temperatures in April and the lack of rainfall encouraged an even and regular development of the vines. However, two nights of spring frost on the 27th and 28th of April affected 2.6 hectares at Chateau Latour, mainly on plots outside of the Enclos used to make the Pauillac de Latour. Rainfall in May was concentrated over only nine days, coupled with early-summer heat, led to an early flowering which took place quickly and evenly in sunny conditions. The first three weeks of June were dry. With its cool early mornings, the dry and moderately hot summer of 2017 enabled the grapes to ripen evenly. Rainfall in the first two weeks of September significantly increased the size of the grapes before the harvest, which took place in good conditions.
Harvest
Picking began on 11th September with Merlot and ended on 4th October with the Cabernet Sauvignon.
Blend
92.1% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7.8% Merlot, 0.1% Petit Verdot
Tasting Comment
Chateau Latour 2017 has a magnificent aromatic spectrum of black cherry and blackcurrant combined with fresher notes of chalk, tobacco, and olive. Precise, structured tannins on a dense, deep palate make this a powerful wine with energy and balance that convey refinement and freshness.
Estate
Chateau Latour is situated in the heart of the Medoc wine region, about 50 km northwest of Bordeaux, where the legend of the vineyards of Bordeaux began. The chateau's prime terroir, l'Enclos, overlooks the Gironde Estuary, which, over the centuries, has given the vineyard its geological complexity and ensures a mild climate. In the years since 1993, under the leadership of the Pinault family, the estate's owner, significant changes have been made to maintain Chateau Latour's pursuit of excellence in the wines it produces.

Ripe and very powerful aromas of black licorice, currants and violets. Full-bodied, dense and flavorful with lots of very new, flashy wood. Sexy and gorgeous. Round and polished tannins. Superb wine for the vintage. Try after 2028.

Smells gorgeous - highly scented with lots of floral notes and ripe blackcurrants - the aromatics burst out of the glass. Succulent and juicy, lively and bright straight away, this is gorgeous - it's direct and focussed, certainly lean but not austere with a wonderfully silky texture and well defined tannins that give energy and frame the wine from start to finish. This really packs a punch, the concentrated flavour while not heavy or plush lingers a long long time and is so enjoyable. Cool blue fruits, pencil led salinity, cola edges and bright acidity - clean, pure and precise. And so drinkable. It's not exuberant, chewy or dense, it's light footed, still with a mineral salty grip but carefully controlled and calm yet generous in all the right places. This will age no doubt, but there's lots of zestiness giving a sense of freshness and approachability that is so delightful. A wine that knocks it out of the park and one so representative of Bordeaux and the Pauillac terroir.

A pure, sleek, seamless beauty, featuring a crystal-clear core of cassis, cherry and damson plum fruit racing along, glistening with lilac, iron and wet pebble notes. Shows terrific spine and clarity, with well-buried grip running throughout. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2025 through 2040.

Points: 97
On the minerality side of the style range, picture crushed rocks, leafy herbs, mint, tobacco, and spice surrounding black currants in the perfume. On the palate, the wine is bright, racy, and energetic. The focus on the bright palate is its core of crispness, cassis, and lingering peppery red currants. The wine is chewy, and fresh, with a minty edge. The wine blends 92.1% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7.8% Merlot, and 0.1% Petit Verdot, reaching 13% ABV. Drink from 2027-2060.

A complex, layered, incredibly impressive Latour, the 2017 Chateau Latour is based on 92.1% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7.8% Merlot, and a splash of Petite Verdot that spent 16 months in new barrels. It's medium to full-bodied, has a ripe, round, beautifully balanced mouthfeel, classic notes of sweet red and black fruits, tobacco, graphite, and crushed stone, ultra-fine tannins, and a gorgeous finish. It's actually much more accessible than I'd imagined a few years ago, and this beauty clearly offers incredible pleasure today, as well as some classic Latour character. It should continue showing well for another 30+ years if well stored.

The 2017 Latour is just starting to open aromatically. Medium in body, with tannins that have begun to soften, the 2017 is super-expressive and inviting today. It's a charming, relatively accessible young Latour that is all about finesse and understatement. Bright saline notes and lifted floral top notes convey class.

This wine's tannins are hugely rich and concentrated. They give what is also a fruity wine power, density and shape. Don't forget the fruits though, because they will be a powerhouse of richness as they mature. Drink this wine from 2024.

The just-released 2017 Latour is surprisingly accessible by this estate's standards, offering up expressive aromas of creme de cassis, cigar wrapper, pencil shavings, burning embers and creamy new oak, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and layered palate that's fleshy and complete, with lively acids and a long, vanillin-inflected finish.

Tasted blind. Deep ruby colour. Subtle and fragrant nose with wonderfully delineated black fruit and savoury spice. The impression is savoury yet youthful. Intense drive and focus is immediate on the palate. There is such energy and vibrancy yet the cassis fruit at the core remains ripe and rich. Mouth-coating tannins would detract from this refinement if it weren't for their ripe and fine-grained nature. A remarkable feat in this vintage to find such ripeness and structure without excess. Harmonious and long. (TP)
