Chateau Chantelune is the passion project of Jose Sanfins, technical director of Margaux third growth Cantenac-Brown, and produces just 400 cases from his personal vineyard each year. The poor, well-drained gravel soils here give a fine home to vigorous, 40-year-old vines that inform a complex and harmonious Cabernet-dominant Bordeaux from the 2015 growing season. Fresh notes of ripe cassis, cherry, violet, cedary spice, and mocha build in the glass, eventually revealing a hint of graphite-like minerality. On the palate, this Left Bank beauty offers a long, silky structure typical of the appellation and promises years of pleasure ahead - there's no better time to acquire your share of bottles than right now!

Margaux 2015
Production Notes
The blending of the wine is done by none other than Eric Boissenot, consultant winemaker for all four Medoc Premier Cru wines - "a skilled interpreter of the land and its wines who pushes them over the top" (WS June 2013). Jose Sanfins (technical director at Chateau Cantenac-Brown) produces this micro-cuvee from his personal vineyard. Located on the highest Garonne gravel hill in Margaux, Chateau Chantelune boasts a unique terroir of gravel and sand deposited over the centuries by the Garonne River. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot vines with on average 40-year-old roots thrive in these "poor soils," digging deep for water and nutrients, and giving the final wine great fruit presence along with velvety tannins and a most pleasing mineral character.
Chateau Chantelune
This exclusive wine is one of the hidden jewels of Margaux. The property takes its name (which translates as "sing to the moon") from the former owner Mr. Soubrane, a woodsman and carpenter who always used to fell his trees during the full moon, saying this gave the best quality wood. When he decided to plant a vineyard at the highest point in Margaux, he continued these traditional techniques. He finally sold his outstanding parcel of vines to Jose Sanfins, as he wished for his vineyard to remain independent. Production is limited to just 400 cases. The small size of the vineyards allows Jose Sanfins to produce small quantities of exceptional fruit and therefore, the best quality wine.

Garnet color. Aromas and flavors of pickled raspberry, roasted beets, suede, and apple cider with a vibrant, dry-yet-fruity fat body and a very long finish with touches of chestnut and mocha yogurt. An unctuous, seductive Bordeaux; fantastic concentration and length.

The 2015 Chateau Chantelune is a total beauty in this wonderful vintage. Margaux may have been the sweet spot in all of Bordeaux in 2015, and the combination of the ideal conditions and incredibly talented winemaker Jose Sanfins make this wine simply sensational. The wine is sourced from a parcel of 40 year-old-vines, which is situated on the highest point in Margaux. It begins with gorgeous aromas of blackberries and ripe currants along with graphite, spring florals and spices all taking shape. Medium to full-bodied, with wonderful concentration and depth, yet lovely elegance. It remains beautifully textured and polished with a gorgeous mouthfeel through the opulent finish.

This sports a sanguine note out front, followed by fresh and enticing damson plum, cherry preserve and raspberry coulis flavors. Richly layered, but with silky tannins that let the fruit hold sway throughout, while light violet and black tea details add background nuance. A mineral edge underscores the finish. Best from 2022 through 2032. -JM

Very intense and ripe dark fruits with strikingly fresh dark berries on the nose. This leads to a concentrated palate with intense dark-plum and blackberry flavors. Try from 2021.
