Marsannay 'Champs Perdrix' 2020

Terroir
Marsannay was only granted village appellation status in 1987. It is the rising star appellation in the Cotes de Nuits, if not the whole of Burgundy. Several vineyards have already applied for 1er cru status. Planted on Jurassic limestone, the vineyards are primarily at least 70% Pinot Noir. Some of the older established vineyards, such as this steep Champs Perdrix on the southern upper slopes of the hillside on Bathonian and Bajocian chalky soil with fossilized oysters and very little topsoil, can cope with the extreme heat and hydric stress of the effects of climate change.

Production
Sirugue reports that harvest (by hand) and vinification were easy, as the fruit came in late August in perfect condition. No sorting was required, no sunburnt berries, and stem ripeness was such that some whole-cluster fermentation was possible. The phenolic ripeness and tannic structure were excellent, and the smaller-than-usual berries had thick skins from which the tannin structure was obtained. Only minimal punching down over a traditional two-week fermentation period, after a short cold soak before transferring to new and mostly 2- to 3-year-old barrels for about 18 months. Only one fining and no filtration.

Tasting Notes
The color is deep purple, and the perfumed aromatics reveal dark fruits, Morello cherry, and minerality. The palate has plenty of gently layered textured, vibrant fruit with tension, and fine ripe tannins leading to a spicy black fruit-driven persistent finish.

Service
Accessible now, especially if decanted or aged over 8-9 years. Pair with grilled wild salmon, game birds, sirloin, or roast beef.
