Eighteen months in barrels and demi-muids to soften tannins and gain roundness.
Tasting Notes
Domaine du Grand Tinel's 2019 'Alexis Establet' Chateauneuf-du-Pape coats the glass in a deep purple. The nose explodes with sweet tobacco and dark, powerful fruit with a hint of licorice. The palate experiences a voluptuous and rounded mouthfeel full of acidic freshness and power that carries this cuvee to the end. Enjoy from 2022 on.
Terroir
Alexis Establet is a majestic Chateauneuf-du-Pape from 100% Grenache grapes, produced only in exceptional vintages with the help of star consultant Philippe Cambie (named 2010 Robert Parker winemaker of the year ). The 100+-year-old vines are planted at the northernmost point of the appellation, in an area known as 'La Gardiole,' in soils formed from chalky stones and old alluvial deposits, along with the 'galets roules' stones. This terroir is reflected in the wine as a combination of the power of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, harmonious elegance, and fresh mineral definition characteristic of the sector.
History
The owners, the Jeune family, is a longstanding and well-known dynasty of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, tracing ancestors back to the 14th century. Christiane Establet, with Pierre Elie Jeune in the 1960s, united the properties of two venerable families, establishing Domaine du Grand Tinel, one of the largest estates in the appellation. The inspiration for the name Tinel comes from the Latin for 'cask.' Today, Christophe Jeune and his two sisters, Beatrice and Isabelle, carry on the tradition of producing traditional-style Chateauneuf in a family-run affair.

All Grenache, the smaller production 2019 Chateauneuf Du Pape Alexis Establet reveals a surprisingly dense purple color as well as a stunning bouquet of black raspberries, new leather, candied orange peel, and ground pepper. This carries to a full-bodied, pure, beautifully balanced, seamless 2019 that has loads of character and charm. It might be one of the finest examples of this cuvee I've tasted. It benefits from air (I followed this bottle for two days) and is going to have two decades of overall longevity.

Aromas of blackberry compote and cherry-vanilla bonbons introduce this deeply concentrated Grenache. In contrast to the producer's unoaked Heres, this intensely berried bottling showcases old-vine Grenache matured 18 months in [...] oak [...], lending roundness and heft to the palate along with subtle accents of ash and singed anise. Framed by fine-grained but penetrating tannins, this powerful wine should drink well for decades to come.Â

Deep, brilliant ruby-red. Expansive aromas of candied red berries, fruitcake and incense take on exotic spice and garrigue qualities with air. Juicy and concentrated on the palate, offering sappy raspberry, cherry cola, vanilla and allspice flavors and hints of lavender and mocha. Velvety tannins add shape to an extremely long, seamless finish that leaves a resonating floral note behind.

Moderately richer and more concentrated than the classic bottling, Grand Tinel's excellent 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Alexis Establet features more cherries and raspberries, but it still has a greenish, herbal streak on the nose. It's 100% Grenache, raised entirely in wood (a mix of sizes, but largely neutral), yielding a full-bodied wine that's silky across the mid-palate, with a long, elegant and intense finish.

Cask sample. Tasted blind. Lovely nose that shows sweet tobacco and dark powerful fruit with a liquorice note. Voluptuous and rounded mouthfeel, really fresh as well as powerful. Vibrant acidity carries this through. Cool and effortless. (AC)
