Background
Since 1858, the Fontanafredda Estate and Winery has been instrumental to Barolo's growth and international recognition, while championing sustainability and community engagement in the Langhe region of Piedmont. Under the visionary entrepreneur Oscar Farinetti, Fontanafredda has built a portfolio of wines that express the depth and diversity of the Langhe.
Estate
The Fontanafredda property in Serralunga d'Alba, a Barolo cru site, is the single largest contiguous wine estate in the Langhe and includes 247 acres of vineyards, 30 acres of woodland, and 10 acres on which the cellars and village buildings lie. Estate-owned vineyards are in the municipalities of Serralunga d'Alba, Diano d'Alba, Barolo, Dogliani, Farigliano, Alba, Rodello, and Murinsengo, at altitudes between 200 and 400 meters.
Terroir
Proprieta in Fontanafredda is a single, demarcated vineyard within the greater cru site of the Fontanafredda estate. Fontanafredda is the only producer to farm this vineyard, making the wine a 'monopole.' The vineyard is roughly 15 ha and surrounds the historic cellars of the estate. It rests on ancient Helvetian and Tortonian soils, now covered with clayey marl and sand. South and southwest exposure, at a vineyard altitude of 250-310 m. a.s.l. Vines are Guyot trained with a density of 4,000-5,000 plants/ha.
Winemaking and Aging
The wine is fermented in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature and then macerated with skins for about one month. Aged in medium and large oak casks for two years, followed by an additional 12 months in bottle.
Tasting Notes
Notes of red berries and violets with tight but silky tannins. The red fruit finish is long and persistent. Ideal with hearty stews and big red meat dishes. It is also delicious on its own after dinner.

Balsamic aromas of juniper, eucalyptus and sage introduce this intense red, which offers a beam of ripe cherry midpalate, swept up in the dusty tannins in the end. The sweet fruit returns, as this finds a nice equilibrium. Best from 2023 through 2042.

Fontanafredda 2016 Barolo Proprieta in Fontanafredda MGA
Rating: 90
This floral wine is immediately appealing, with flavors of cherry and menthol in a pliant [sic]. All of the fruit comes from the 37-acre Fontanafredda cru, a monopole at the northern end of Serralunga d’Alba.

The Fontanafredda 2016 Barolo Fontanafredda Proprieta in Fontanafredda shows some muddled aromas with a lack of clarity and focus. That's too bad, given how extraordinary fruit in this vintage is deemed to be. You do get a good showing of black fruit, earth, tar and licorice. This wine achieves a mild impact in the mouth with soft tannins and a medium finish.
