2015 'Le Dome' Saint-Emilion Grand Cru
Producer Notes
Le Dome is allegedly the biggest expression of Cabernet Franc of a Bordeaux wine - surpassing Chateau Cheval Blanc and Le Dome's neighbor, Chateau Angelus. We started making the wine in 1996, two years after our arrival in Saint-Emilion. With only 16 years of history, Le Dome competes with the appellation's greatest and most historic chateaux.
Vineyard Notes
The Le Dome single vineyard is situated close to Chateau Angelus, Premier Grand Cru Classe. Its origins have their roots in the 'garage' movement of the 1990s. It is one of the three Saint Emilion Grand Crus that outgrew the movement to go on to challenge the Cru Classes' each year.
Viticulture
Le Dome is a blend of 80% Cabernet Franc and 20% Merlot. The vines are cropped low - around 30 hectolitres a hectare - four bunches to the vine (less than half the volume authorized by the appellation), ensuring concentration. The soil is sand over 'crasse de fer' (iron deposits). These deposits and the south-facing slope ensure amazing drainage, keeping the vines seeking moisture. The identified parcel was purchased only as a result of its provenance. The terroir and the age of the vines were the determining factors. The parcel's neighbors are illustrious and include Chateau Angelus, a 1er Grand Cru Classe.
Vinification
Le Dome has two to three runs of green harvesting - at fruit set and veraison - ensuring that only the most perfect are sorted, firstly by bunches, then after destemming, grape by grape. Only conveyors transport the grapes. The wine is fermented in wooden vats after extreme cold maceration. The wines undergo malolactic fermentation in new French oak and are barrel-aged in an air-conditioned cellar at 18 degrees C.

Composed of 80% Cabernet Franc and 20% Merlot, the deep garnet-purple colored 2015 Le Dome has a drop dead gorgeous perfume of violets, black forest cake, rose hip and red jelly with touches of lavender, spice cake and earth. The palate is medium to full-bodied and super intense with super ripe, super fine-grained tannins, wonderful freshness and a very long perfumed, mineral-laced finish.

What could be considered the flagship wine of the estate (although most wines are single vineyards raised identically), the 2015 Le Dome is the normal blend of 80% Cabernet Franc and 20% Merlot that's from a parcel located down on the slopes of the Saint Emilion plateau. This beauty boasts a deep, saturated purple color to go with a huge, exotic notes of blueberry and cassis fruit intermixed with notions of crushed flowers, mint, violets, and cassis, crushed flowers, violets, and hints of earth. With full-bodied richness, phenomenal purity of fruit, and a sexy, seductive texture, it's another knockout wine from this estate. Drink it any time over the coming 10-15 years.

Very suave and attractively cast aromas of violets, blueberries, plums and dark chocolate with spicy, cedary notes and slate-like nuances. The palate's velvety, fleshy and smooth with dark berries, chocolate and roasted-coffee flavors set in ribbon-like, silky tannins. Try from 2022.

Chocolate-covered black raspberries, ripe, juicy, smoky plums, crushed stone and cherry liqueur really makes an excellent impression on your palate. There is length, purity and fat, supple textures to be savored. This wine was made from a blend of 80% Cabernet Franc and 20% Merlot [...].

80% Cabernet Franc. Fresh, floral and perfumed. A long way from its original (concentrated, oaky) style. Lovely, refined, velvety texture and carefully matted tannins. Freshness and persistence on the finish. Elegance and harmony.

The 2015 Le Dome offers smudged brambly red fruit mixed with cedar and leather, a little more forward than I would have expected. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin, plenty of black cherry and white pepper notes with a slightly animally, yet persistent finish. This does improve in the glass so give it ample aeration. Tasted blind at the Southwold 2015 Bordeaux tasting.

A solid version, in the extracted style, with plum and fig paste flavors laced with notes of ganache, warm tobacco and licorice. Offers a toasty finish, but the fruit pushes through well enough, showing a nice swath of loam. A little cellaring will stretch this out further. Best from 2020 through 2030.
