2018 Zeitoun Vineyard Pinot Noir
Tasting Notes
Dark berry aromas mix with a touch of dried herbs and notes of lavender in this Zeitoun Vineyard offering. The oak is perfectly integrated with subtle tones of vanilla and wood spices. Musky undertones complete the wonderfully dark and brooding aromatics. Muscular in the mouth, the tannins are of a different place, with mineral undertones and nice acidity to carry to the finish.
Winemaking Notes
Picked early in the morning to keep the fruit as cool as possible. The fruit was carefully destemmed and saignee'd to concentrate flavors. Following a 20-day cold soak, the fruit was warmed to start fermentation. 10-15 day ferment with peak temperatures reaching 95+ degrees. The wine was then macerated for another 10-15 days to find the right balance of tannins and structure before being pressed. After Pressing, free-run juice and press fractions are combined into 30% new oak barrels and cellared for 16 months on the lees with monthly stirring.
Vineyard Notes
Zeitoun Vineyard, our smallest vineyard at about 7 acres of eroded volcanic rock over marine sedimentary soil, is located at a saddle in the hill just east of the winery in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA. With its deep pockets of clay, this rocky vineyard produces structured wines that are naturally dark in color and redolent of dark bramble and plum fruits. We do not know what clones are planted in this mysterious vineyard.

Vivid ruby. Spice-tinged dark berries, candied flowers, mocha and smoky minerals on the fragrant nose. Supple and open-knit, offering juicy blackberry, cherry-vanilla and lavender pastille flavors that deepen as the wine opens up. Shows bright floral lift on the long, incisive finish, which is framed by smooth tannins. 30% new French oak.

Tasting note: This is aromatically similar to the Delfina with a subtle herbal tea nuance. The suave, round and more substantial medium-bodied flavors possess a seductive texture while displaying good length on the dusty and mildly austere finale. This could use a bit more depth, but more should develop if this is allowed a year or two of bottle aging.

This subtle wine brings delicate notes of rose petals, cherry candy, mineral and herbal tea. There is an underlying, palate-drying minerality, as if fermented in concrete (no indication that it was). In keeping with the winery's other 2018s, the fruit hits a strong cranberry flavor and stays there.
