2022 Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir
The Vineyard
Our three Estate vineyards are located in the northern Dundee Hills appellation. The AVA is perhaps best known for its rust-red volcanic soils formed by Columbia River Basalts more than 14 million years ago. These rich clay-loam soils, predominantly Jory and Nekia, are deep and well-drained. Combined, all three vineyard sites total 60 acres under vine and comprise more than 80 individual vineyard blocks. Planting began in 1988 with Pommard and Wadenswil. Today, the oldest vines in the vineyard are now reaching their zenith at 34+ years of age, and they express terroir-driven power and finesse.
The Vintage
Winter precipitation was about 10% above the 1991-2021 average. April came on with great promise, but the middle of the month turned cold, leading to an unprecedented freeze that affected some primary buds. Our spring and early summer continued to be quite cool (around 2.2 degrees below average) with rain events persisting into early June. As we moved into summer, the season came on strong, hot and dry, with temperatures running almost 6 degrees above normal from August through October. This was the point at which our abundant winter rains came into play, allowing the canopy to stay green well into the fall. Warm, dry conditions in October gave us the latitude to ripen all the fruit that had gotten off to a late start. Our last pick on October 21st ended just before the autumn rains commenced. The yields across all vineyards, projected at 30% of normal, ended in the normal range. Early indications point to lovely, classic white wines with ripe fruit character and well-defined acid backbones, while our Pinot Noirs show high-toned aromatics and rich, concentrated flavors. - Executive Winemaker, Don Lange

Tasting Notes: A dazzling expression of this [...] estate, the 2022 ‘Estate’ Pinot Noir represents a barrel selection of the top 22 barrels from vines rooted in Jory volcanic soils in the heart of the Dundee Hills AVA. The wine glows with a vibrant ruby-red center, tapering to a delicate purple rim. On the nose, it reveals an alluring medley of dark fruits - black raspberry, black cherry, and wild plum - interwoven with floral notes of crushed violets and whispers of crushed oranges. Subtle hints of spice box and wet stone add complexity, reflecting its volcanic origins. The palate is layered and refined, offering a seamless interplay of blackberries, red currants, and pomegranate pulp, underscored by savory nuances of dried herbs, salted blood orange, and a faint umami touch of roasted seaweed. The texture is supple yet structured, with expressive tannins providing depth and a balance that nods to its aging potential. Highly recommended.

Tasting Notes: This is comprised of the top 22 barrels off the estate vineyards in Dundee Hills, all on Jory volcanic soils. The texture and longevity that this wine delivers nods to a serious ageability and is crafted that way. A melange of clones and 35% new French oak with aromatics of raspberry leaf, dusty red berries, mouthfuls of pomegranate pulp, salted blood orange and intensely savoury dried herbs. The finish is lengthy and intense, with a note of roasted nori that lingers on the tongue.

Tasting Notes: This is a fuller-bodied, more richly textured wine than I expected, but what a pleasant surprise. Ripe blackberries play off of a leather aroma accented by a pinch of thyme. Look for velvety tannins and snappy acidity as you wade through tangy citrus, saline and dark raspberry flavors. This is that velvet glove people are always talking about.

Tasting Notes: The 2022 Pinot Noir Dundee Hills pours a ripe magenta/almost purple-tinged hue and is layered on the nose with notes of black cherries, lavender, sweet earth, rosemary, and pine. Medium to full-bodied, it has more structure and broader shoulders, with ripe tannins and even acidity. It’s built to last over the coming 12-15 years.

Tasting Notes: More savory than sweet and decidedly spicy, the 2022 Pinot Noir Lange Estate Vineyard opens with a burst of ground cloves, cinnamon sticks and dried black cherries. This displays silken textures while remaining lifted in feel as a tart wave of wild berry fruit gives way to tactile mineral tones toward the close. Blue and purple inner florals resonate as the lightly structured 2022 tapers off with a savory tinge.
