2017 Tradition Pinot Noir
Winemaker's Notes
Traditions are meant to highlight deeply held concepts, beliefs, and customs. At Van Duzer, we transmit this idea into a limited production of Pinot Noir. Made with old-world stylings and blended with new world methods, this wine gives rise to the traditions of our vineyard and our ongoing commitment to quality and distinction in winemaking.
Winemaking
Over 30-year-old vines from original plantings on the Homestead side of the vineyard are chosen for each vintage. The grapes are harvested separately, with over 40% whole-cluster fermented. Old-world techniques, such as daily "pigeage" or foot-stomping, coupled with 18 months in 75% new French oak barrels, deliver a wine of intriguing complexity and exuberance. We believe this wine evokes a certain sense of time and place at Van Duzer, and we invite you to share in our traditions as we release this allocation to you. Cheers!
The Vineyards
Nestled in the Van Duzer Corridor, our vineyard is directly impacted by oceanic influences, keeping us warmer during a cold growing season and cooler during warmer vintages than the rest of the Willamette Valley. Tradition Pinot Noir is grown in the historic homestead block on the east side of the property and protected by a knoll crowning the hilltop. In 2017, optimal growing conditions and favorable weather at the end of the season allowed the fruit to hang until October 10th before picking.
Wine Notes
As you raise your glass, a shimmering garnet red color gives way to spices accented with hibiscus and black cherry aromas. A lively entry delivers juicy blackberry and red currant flavors laced with cocoa and cedar. A light minerality and spicy tannins round out this wine on the finish.

Deep magenta. Highly perfumed red and blue fruit, floral and exotic spice aromas are complemented by suggestions of cola and botanical herbs. Juicy and penetrating in the mouth, offering cherry cola and mulberry flavors underscored by a smoky mineral element. Dusty tannins emerge slowly on a very long, spicy finish that echoes the cola and floral notes.
