Vintage Notes
The growing season began with good winter rainfall, followed by a dry, cool spring. Unfortunately, the fruit set was poor, which kept crop levels below average. The first two days of February received rain from the north, with 31mm recorded in the gauge at Amery. The rain helped fill the dry soil profile and flesh out berries, lifting fruit flavors and enhancing wine quality. Weather conditions for the final ripening period were cool and dry, perfect for flavor development.

Terroir
The Grenache vineyard has a northeast exposure. The dry climate forces the 25-year-old vines to seek the complex underlying soil, consisting of quartz and ironstone gravel, weathered and calcareous sandstone, siltstone, and limestone.

Vinification
The grapes were hand-harvested on the 24th of March 2020. The fruit was then open-fermented and hand plunged on skins before traditional basket pressing in the winery's 1928 press. The wine matured in French oak puncheons.

Tasting Notes
Kay Brother's 2020 Basket Pressed Grenache starts with a bright crimson color and a bouquet exhibiting floral notes followed by strawberry, thyme, and mint. Rich strawberry conserve, raspberry, and spice on the palate are followed by powdery tannins and refreshing acidity. It is delicate and delicious. Pair alongside lighter dishes, such as tapas.

Sandy loams soils over gravel, siltstone and limestone. A cuvee responsible for consistently stellar value, bridling lifted florals, kirsch, lavender, thyme, dank spice elements and dark cherry. I like the ebbs between dark and lighter shades across the full-weighted palate. The finish, all white pepper and clove. Delicious and immensely long.

The 2020 Basket Pressed Grenache is exotic, spicy and layered with notes of jubes and pastilles. This is fresh and pretty--the tannins are almost powdery and fine through the finish--a hallmark of great McLaren Vale Grenache. Nicely handled, great value for money here [...]!
