In its position roughly equidistant to the Basque coast and Madrid, Ribera del Duero reflects a legacy of the Atlantic world. Spanish imperial holdings furnished American oak to winemakers here, while seafaring centers to the north brought many Bordelais techniques to bear on the native Tempranillo vines.
Bodegas Briego extends these traditions into the modern era with a 2016 'Adalid' Reserva, offering cassis and vanilla aromas and enough matured tannin and subtle aniseed notes to excite the palate.
Keep a supply of this powerfully-built red, aged into its preferred drinking window with plenty of years to go.

2016 Adalid Reserva Ribera del Duero
Technical Details
Grape Variety: Tempranillo
Aging: At least 12 months in French and American oak
Alcohol: 14.50%
Tasting Notes
Red color with medium-high intensity and teak tones on the edge of the glass. Spectacular intensity highlighting black fruits, violets, and cocoa. A hint of dairy. The elegant wood creates a toasted background with kitchen spices. The excellent symbiosis of ripe tannins from black fruits with the essence of wood creates a complex intensity of flavors: licorice, toffee, and American tobacco.

The 2016 Ribera del Duero Reserva 'Adalid' is a lovely showing. It begins with inviting aromatics of dark cherries, blackberries and dark plums followed by vanilla, spices, cigar box and leather nuances. This is medium to full-bodied and a firm texture framed by a nice touch of underlying acidity guiding it into the long finish. A wonderful effort which should continue to evolve for at least a decade.

Adalid uses fruit from Bodegas Briego's home vineyard in high-altitude Fompedraza with a focus on parcels of sandy loam soils. Exhibiting the freshness and "Atlantic" flavours of a cooler, high-yielding vintage, this is deftly wooded in 50% new French and American barrels, with violet and vanilla spice top notes, fine-grained tannins, crunchy acidity and layers of raspberry and wild strawberry fruit.
