Tasting Notes
Our 2019 Bridlewood Santa Barbara County Chardonnay is a vibrant, mineral-driven white wine reflective of cool, foggy mornings on the coast. Our Chardonnay shows the color of light straw with a vibrant green hue in the glass and aromas of soft floral and wet slate on the nose. The palate is dry, crisp, and light, with a flinty minerality. A depth of white peach, apricot, and lemon zest stays energetic through the long finish. Our Chardonnay is the perfect squeeze of lemon with raw oysters and brunch fare, such as eggs benedict with creamy hollandaise sauce.
Viticulture
For this wine, we harvested Chardonnay clone 76, which thrives on its own roots in sandy soils atop bluffs located only 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean. The majority of the grapes for our Chardonnay originated from Rancho Real in the Santa Maria Valley, an east-west valley that funnels in cooling marine breezes and allows longer hang time. The 2019 growing season experienced normal rainfall and conditions in line with the previous two vintages. Harvest produced smaller yields of exceptional-quality fruit with concentrated flavor.
Winemaking
Following 100% hand-harvesting, we whole-cluster pressed the bunches and clarified the juice for two days prior to racking. Fermentation occurred in concrete eggs and stainless steel to highlight minerality and allow the fruit characteristics to shine. To give the palate more depth, the lees were stirred weekly.
