Chateau Meyney
Saint-Estephe 2019
History
Saint-Estephe's prestigious vineyards developed around the Meyney estate. From the mid-13th century, the land was managed by Cistercian monks, who made it one of the first structured wine-producing properties in the northern Medoc. Long coveted by the wealthy merchants and aristocrats of Bordeaux, the vineyard was returned to the church when Pierre Forthon bequeathed it to the Peres Feuillants. The term 'chateau' was attached to Meyney by the Luetkens family in the 19th century, when it entered the modern era thanks to a series of inspired women. In 1919, the Cordiers, a powerful family of merchants, acquired the property and developed an international reputation and distribution for Meyney's wines. Since its acquisition by the Credit Agricole group in 2004, this sleeping beauty has been awakened under the leadership of Anne Le Naour.
Vintage Details
2019 was a very fine vintage, a solar one! A dry, milder-than-average winter gave way to a rainy spring with cool nights. Budburst and flowering, therefore, came relatively early. The vineyard remained very healthy. As in 2016 and 2018, the summer was characterized by high temperatures, with a few scattered showers (two redeeming spells of rain in July and August). It is a vintage of the climate as much as of the terroir. The grapes are excellent and have a richness that we would like to find every year.
Production
Double-sorting grape harvest (in the vineyard and in the cellar). Gentle vinification adapted to each tank, to extract the best. 18 months of maturation in French oak barrels.
Blend
57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 16% Petit Verdot

Tasting Notes: The 2019 Meyney has a divine bouquet, so pure and winsome with floral red berry scents, beautifully integrated new oak and superb precision. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fleshy to the point where you can almost overlook the backbone of this Saint-Estephe. It could have been blowsy, yet it retains superb balance and feels luxuriant and long on the finish. This is a stellar showing easily eclipsing its performances either in barrel or just after bottling. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.

Tasting Notes: Showing much better in bottle than it did from the barrel, the deeply colored wine is imbued with cigar box, tobacco leaf, spice, espresso, wet earth, and dark currants and blackberries. On the palate, the wine focuses on its medium/full-bodied core of ripe, sweet, dark red fruits, soft, tannins, and polished finish and its light kiss of chocolate in the endnote.

Tasting Notes: This wine sneaks up on you, it needs time to seduce, revealing fresh, floral aromas with graphite. The chiseled palate - fresh and concentrated but in a subtle manner - conveys elegance with vivacity and lift on the long finish, with more floral notes and spice coming from a high percentage of Petit Verdot. A beautiful wine that needs time.

Tasting Notes: A solid, slightly burly version, featuring streaks of tar and bay leaf mixed with dark plum and black currant preserve flavors. The finish is underscored by a warm paving stone note, which adds cut, drive and a hint of old school. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot.

Tasting Notes: Cassis, currants, ripe tobacco, and cedar pencil notes define the bouquet of the 2019 Chateau Meyney, a medium to full-bodied, concentrated Saint-Estephe that shows the elegant, moderately concentrated, yet nicely structured and balanced style of the vintage. It's already accessible with a decant but will benefit from just a handful of years in the cellar and have 15 years or more of longevity.

Tasting Notes: A blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, and 16% Petit Verdot, the 2019 Meyney is deep garnet-purple in color. It gives up notes of cedar and pencil lead over a core of crushed blackcurrants, kirsch, and wild blueberries with a touch of Sichuan pepper. The medium-bodied palate is lively and chewy, with just enough fruit and a savory finish.

Tasting Notes: Aromas of sweet cherries and berries mingled with tobacco, loamy soil and petals introduce the 2019 Meyney, a medium to full-bodied, seamless and lively wine with fine depth at the core, powdery tannins and an attractive sense of completeness. This is an understated but charming Saint-Estephe that has turned out nicely in bottle.

Tasting Notes: 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 16% Petit Verdot. [...] Harvested 24 September to 11 October. Deep crimson to the rim. Bright and fresh on the nose. Dark fruit with a minty note but still relatively closed. Hints at complexity. Smooth, suave texture, the tannins very fine. More freshness than 2018. Firm, long finish. Balanced. Promises well for the long term. (JL)
