'Heres' Chateauneuf du Pape 2020

Cuvee Details
This new cuvee was created in 2006. It was born of a desire to respect the exceptional terroir of a plot of very old vines, located in the La Gardiole area (Les Sables and Le Couchant). The terroir and sandy soils give this cuvee outstanding aromatic potential, great finesse, and elegance, with light tannins and a silky touch.

Tasting Notes and Food Pairing Suggestions
The wine has a ruby color to its core. Ripe nose full of black plums, blueberries, dark cherries, smoked herbs, clove, and Earl Grey tea. Full-bodied with silky tannins and gentle acidity. Captivating earthy flavors of dried soil, violets, and wet stones fill the palate with Bing cherry compote and wild strawberry. Graceful finish. Enjoy with grilled or roasted red meats.

Harvest
Entirely manual picking is followed by systematic sorting in the vineyard and then on a sorting table in the cellar.

Winemaking
Traditional with complete destemming. The totality of the fermentation takes place in stainless steel tank. The temperatures are controlled throughout alcoholic fermentation. Pumping over 1 or 2 times a day, along with 3 or 4 "delestages" during fermentation. Long vatting from 3 to 4 weeks. A daily tasting of the tank takes place to determine the date of devatting.

Tasting Notes: This smells like an entire spice cabinet with notes of dried berries, but nothing raisiny here. In fact, this concentrated and highly structured Chateauneuf is decisively dry. The great tannins drive the long, complex, spicy and stony finish. A pure Grenache from very old vines. Drink or hold.

Tasting Notes: The 2020 Chateauneuf Du Pape Heres is all Grenache that spent a year in tank. It offers a big, juicy array of ripe cherries, strawberries, spring flowers, and sappy garrigue that shows more floral and almost rose petal notes with time in the glass. Beautiful on the palate as well, it's medium to full-bodied, has a supple, seamless profile, integrated tannins, and outstanding length.

Tasting Notes: The vintage star among the portfolio from Domaine du Grand Tinel is the 2020 Chateauneuf-du-Pape Heres, a single varietal Grenache. It bursts from the glass with enticing aromas of blood orange, red and black fruits, dried herbs and a dash of mint. The tannin structure is much smoother compared to the Alexis Establet from the same vintage. This full-bodied, concentrated red has everything that's needed for a long life in bottle.

Tasting Notes: Purity, energy and refinement, the wine is focused on its expression of Grenache and all of its kirsch filled core of sweet, ripe, freshness. The wine, produced from some of the estates' oldest Grenache vines is effortless to drink. The wine was made from 100% old vine Grenache. Drink from 2022-2036.

Tasting Notes: I have had mixed reactions to the Heres bottling over the years, and the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Heres continues that tradition. While this 100% Grenache, all stainless-steel cuvee delivers attractive notes of black cherries and loamy earth, I found it lacking mid-palate richness. Supple and easy-drinking, it's a very good wine but not a special one.
