The grapes are grown in the famous Stagecoach Vineyard. Sequoia Grove was one of the first to buy fruit from the Stagecoach Vineyard at its inception. The greatest wines begin in the vineyard. We work closely with our growers and have intimate knowledge of our estate fruit. Our goal is individual vine balance for the perfect ripening of each cluster. The grapes for this wine are pulled from five separate blocks: 33% Cabernet Sauvignon from block GM2B (aka Granite Meadows), 23% Cabernet Sauvignon from block 8 (the highest block at Stagecoach), 22% Cabernet Sauvignon from block C5 that overlooks the city of Napa, 14% Merlot from the very steep block 10, and 8% from Petit Verdot block 3.

Vintage Details
The 2019 vintage was an excellent vintage with tonnage levels close to average. The year began with heavy winter rains, followed by a few spring showers. Summer weather was moderate and ideal. Outside of anticipated heat spikes in August and September, conditions during harvest were also mild and lovely. The lack of typical morning fog during the growing season sped up phenolic ripeness. The 2019 vintage is high quality, with a signature of freshness, generous fruit, and lush tannins.

Production
At harvest time, any compromised clusters were left on the vine. The fruit was hand-picked, and berries were hand-sorted before and after the destemmer. This wine was hand-crafted in our new state-of-the-art winemaking facility. The juice went through a 3-day cold soak to settle the solids before inoculation with a unique French yeast strain. Pump-overs were executed daily to fine-tune and extract the rich color and tannins from the skins. After fermentation, the wine was moved to French oak barrels to initiate malolactic fermentation and was racked 2 to 3 times before bottling and extended aging. Each barrel was individually selected for this blend. This wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Tasting Notes
The perfumy nose of this dark black Cabernet is full of sage, brambles, blueberry, cassis, carob, black ink, graphite, wet granite, and California chaparral with a woodsy background and a dried blueberry, floral note. The palate is luscious and voluptuous with a nice line of acidity. The broad and thick wine is stuffed with flavors of black cherry, chocolate-covered cherry, and rose petal. Cellar potential of 20+ years.

Tasting Notes: Deep and relaxed at first, this full-bodied and well-concentrated wine offers bold, dark cherries, dried plums and dark chocolate backed by deceptively strong tannins that build with each sip. Graphite, oak char and earth accents add to its complexity and power. Best from 2028-2038.

Tasting Notes: A blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, and 8% Petit Verdot, the 2019 Sequoia Grove Stagecoach Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon has a deep garnet-purple color. It bursts with bold notions of blackcurrant cordial, plum preserves, and cedar chest, backed up by hints of cardamom, clove oil, and tilled soil. The full-bodied palate has lovely tension and firm ripe tannins supporting the generous black fruit layers, finishing spicy.

Tasting Notes: 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot. The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Stagecoach Vineyard is a potent, brooding wine that captures the personality of this site in its inky dark fruit and imposing tannins. The 2019 needs a few years to soften, but it certainly is impressive. Creme de cassis, chocolate, lavender and sweet spice fill out the layers beautifully in this imposing Cabernet Sauvignon from Sequoia Grove.

Tasting Notes: It's always nice when a winery's single-vineyard offerings are substantially different from one another. In contrast to the supple, easy-drinking Morisoli Vineyard bottling, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Stagecoach Vineyard is much more structured and firm and even demands a few years of cellaring. Classy notes of pencil shavings, cassis and cherries appear on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is dusty and tannic but ripe and mouthwatering on the lingering finish.

Tasting Notes: The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Stagecoach Vineyard has some upside, although it’s well worth trying today as well. Cassis, blueberries, iron, violets, and some obvious mineral nuances give way to a medium to full-bodied Cabernet that has ripe tannins and a straight, tight, focused style on the palate. Give it a few years and enjoy over the following 15+.
