Vineyard: Situated in Valtuille, Quilos, Villafranca del Bierzo
Altitude: Between 530 and 600 m
Soil: Clay and river stones, depending on the area
Plot: A lot of small plots in different villages
Average Yield: Typically between 45 and 60 hl/ha for the whites

Varieties
85% Mencia, 10% Garnacha Tintorera, 5% Dona Blanca and Palomino

Winemaking
100% destemmed but uncrushed berries. Spontaneous fermentation with natural yeast in stainless vats with controlled temperature. Malolactic fermentation in the same vat. Aging over the fine lees for five months. Light fining and filtration before bottling.

Location and Soils
The cellar is situated in Carracedo del Monasterio, a little village in the valley of D.O. Bierzo, northwest Spain. Surrounded by large mountain chains, the Ancares and Montes Aquilianos, the soils vary due to the diversity of terroir and altitudes. Clay and some river stones are the usual soil at the bottom of the valley. We can find slate in the highest areas, such as Espanillo.

Climate
The microclimate of the Bierzo Valley has an Atlantic influence, with cold, rainy winters, a mild spring, and quite hot summers. Winter and spring rainfall are enough to feed the vineyard to a good maturity.

Vineyard
About 18 hectares divided into many plots situated in the Bierzo Valley, in the villages of Valtuille, Quilos, and Villafranca del Bierzo. The different plots are grown in old, typical bush vines and new plantations.

Tasting Notes: The 2023 Brezo Mencia that I tasted last year when it felt very young and fruit-driven seems more evolved and polished now, ready to drink. It contains some [...] Garnacha Tintorera and [...] white grapes that give it agility and freshness. [...] It was bottled in April 2024.
