The name 'Fog and Wind' reflects the terroir ideal for growing cool-climate varieties. The added benefit of a long, cool 2023 growing season in California's North Coast allowed for extended hangtime and gentle, even ripening, gifting producers with a slight increase in yields of superb grapes with bright acidity and (for reds) polished tannins. Reflecting this, the 2023 Nightwing Pinot Noir is already showing signs of greatness, wowing wine critic Jeremy Young of the International Wine Report. He awarded it 95 points, praising its "striking purity and tension."

2023 Pinot Noir Nightwing Vineyard Sonoma Coast

The Vineyards
Nightwing Vineyard is located at an elevation of 1,200 feet on a windy mountainside at the eastern edge of the Petaluma Gap within the cool Sonoma Coast appellation. Its Goulding cobbly clay loam soils and steep slopes are well-draining and well-suited for growing world-class Pinot Noir. The vineyard gets its name from the variety of winged creatures that come alive as the sun sets over the vines. The name is also a nod to the land's owner, a former WWII pilot, who built an active landing strip on the site. Nightwing is home to 44 acres of Pinot Noir divided into small blocks on various slopes and rootstocks. Sojourn's blocks were planted in 2017 to Pommard clone as well as Dijon clones 115 and 777. The Pommard clone provides a deep, rich core, with the others adding layers of complexity and robust fruit flavors.

Winemaker Notes
In 2023, plentiful winter rains took Sonoma out of a drought. A cool summer allowed the vines to ripen evenly, and the weather stayed moderate during the growing season, with periodic light rains. Harvesting started three weeks later than normal, and Pinot Noir yields were above average. The cooler weather resulted in fresh natural acidity and firmer tannins, both good for cellaring. Grape phenolics ripened at lower sugar levels, and the resulting 2023 Pinot Noirs are more "Burgundian" in nature. The Nightwing vines were perfectly balanced in 2023, and the grapes achieved optimal maturity. Pommard and 115 clones were again the foundation of the blend, with a touch of 777 rounding it out. The result is a rich Pinot Noir with silky tannins.

Tasting Notes: The 2023 Fog and Wind Nightwing Vineyard Pinot Noir from the Sonoma Coast rises from its high-elevation perch in the Petaluma Gap with striking purity and tension. Aromas of red cherry, raspberry coulis, and blood orange zest are lifted by hints of bay leaf, crushed rose, and smoked tea. The palate is graceful yet concentrated, unfolding with layers of ripe cranberry, wild strawberry, and pomegranate framed by supple tannins and a fine thread of saline minerality. Subtle notes of clove, cedar dust, and damp earth provide depth, grounding the wine’s lifted coastal freshness. A gentle wave of acidity extends the finish.
