2019 Winemaker Series Petit Verdot

Vineyards and Winemaking
Petit Verdot is one of the five main Bordeaux varietals, along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec. Dark and dense with a perfumed nose, Petit Verdot is usually used in small amounts to lift the aromatics and add body and complexity to Cabernet Sauvignon. In 2019, Winemaker Marcus Notaro was extremely impressed by the Petit Verdot from Atlas Peak and decided to produce this bottling. This wine is a blend of 98% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Antica Vineyard in the Atlas Peak District of Napa Valley. The wine was aged for 18 months in 100% new French oak.

Vintage
Spring in Napa Valley was wet with significant rain that increased canopy growth and caused some shatter during bloom in the vineyards. Our vineyard team worked diligently to balance canopies and fruit load, and to expose the fruit to the sun at the right time. Following this wet, cool start to the year, which led to high vigor, the summer gave way to near-ideal growing conditions. As in 2018, a long growing season allowed grapes to reach optimal ripeness. Yields were lower than 2018, and harvest was later than usual. The main challenge this harvest was powering wineries with generators, as the power company shut off power to mitigate potential fires from high winds. Fires in upper Sonoma did not affect northern Napa Valley vineyards, and winds kept smoke out of the valley. Overall quality is quite high, with beautiful dark fruit aromas, nice complexity, and more richness than in 2018.

Wine
This Petit Verdot offers unique perfumed aromas along with hints of violet, orange peel, and rhubarb. The wine has a savory mid-palate and a rich, powerful finish. Pork roast with rosemary and sage or smoked beef brisket would be a flavorful complement to this wine.
