Vigneron Pascal Aufranc feels especially fortunate to work with Gamay vines on the granitic-sandy "En Remont" hillside of Chenas, which he first made home in 1993. Having acquainted himself with the terroir there over the next thirty years, this 2023 bottling represents a culmination of those efforts. The delightful French wine's vibrant red and orange-fruit character, fresh floral nuances, and youthfully approachable mouthfeel overdeliver, especially given its site-specific origins, expert assembly, and generous discount!
History
The Chenas vines date back to 1316, when Philippe le Long uprooted oak trees to plant vines. A few years later, Chenas was found in all the cellars of King Louis XIII. Reputed to be the 'rarest' of the Beaujolais crus, I'm proud to be able to cultivate these vines that have so much history. At the end of the road, 'En Remont' is a protected and confidential terroir. Off the beaten track, my estate is an old farmhouse that breathes tradition through its beautiful stones, overlooking the village. I settled in 1993. On this hill, 'En Remont,' I am surrounded by trees, fields, and vines. This mosaic of landscapes gives my wines a singular expression, a symbol of this harmony.

Tasting Notes: This wine has a savory core that is fleshed out by fruit. The wine seduces from the start with enticing aromas of muddled plum and dried field grass that hug cassis. The palate is layered and complex in the best of ways with youthful tannins that have purpose and vision. Simply gorgeous.

Tasting Notes: The 2023 Chenas En Remont has a high-toned bouquet of kirsch and blood orange with just a bit of reduction. The palate is medium-bodied with granular tannins and well-judged acidity as vibrant raspberry and cranberry fruit come together on the finish. This is better than the previous vintage.
