2021 Catignano Chianti Classico DOCG

Wine Details
Catignano is a plateau in the southernmost part of the Dievole area. Here, the soil has a marked calcareous component with the presence of Alberese stone. We are located on the Monte Morello Formation, which dates back about 60 million years. The exposure is west and southeast, with plenty of sun during the day but also rather cold temperatures at night, with a temperature range that favors the aromatic development of the grapes.

Fermentation: For 14 to 15 days in 75-hl raw cement vats at a maximum temperature of 28 degrees C

Tasting Notes
A nose characterized by red fruits, the perfume opens with notes of blackberry and currant, then continues to present tertiary complexity of leather, tobacco, graphite, and licorice. Warm and juicy on the palate, with notes of ripe red fruit. Serve at 18 degrees C.

Tasting Notes: A brilliant red, sporting cherry, raspberry, pomegranate and floral aromas and flavors. As this develops on the palate, notes of earth, iron and wild herbs add detail, showing fine balance and length. Drink now through 2036.

Tasting Notes: Smoky and woodsy notes dominate the nose of this Gallo Nero, with touches of cinnamon and red cherries. Very restrained and almost austere on the nose. Crisp and tense palate with a medium body, firm grainy tannins and a good, youthful finish. Not fully ready to drink. It needs at least six months to hit its maturity. [...].

Tasting Notes: Opening with a lively, red fruited nose, the single vineyard Catignano Chianti Classico offers freshness, harmonious acids, and fine grained texture on a medium weight, nicely balanced palate. Finishes long with an attractive floral note. The Catignano vineyard is at 370m with high albarese content. Matured 13 months in large oak barrels. 14.5% alc.

Tasting Notes: The 2021 Chianti Classico Catignano is redolent of red cherry, iron, game, smoke, licorice and white pepper. This feral, powerful Chianti Classico will benefit from a year or two in bottle, but I expect it will always be quite incisive in personality. The broad, ample finish is notable.

Tasting Notes: Dievole's trio of single vineyards are all located within the district of Vagliagli. While Petrignano and Casanova are to the north, Catignano is found in the warm southern stretch at the limit of the Chianti Classico zone. The 11-hectare site sits on a 370-metre plateau characterized by Alberese, or calcareous marls. Dark red cherry and flint take on evocative Tuscan scents of sundried tomato and basil. Full without being lush, this broadens across the palate with black pepper, sweet earth and mint. Gravelly tannins and crisp acidity are integrated and balanced with the firm fruit. Still a bit wound up.
