2017 Syrah Paso Robles

Vintage Description
Drought conditions continued for the 2017 vintage, and yields were naturally low once again. Growing conditions were steady throughout the season, with a warm spike in September that briefly stalled ripening in later varieties. Favorable late-season weather remained dry and consistent, allowing for excellent hang time through harvest. The resulting wines show notable concentration and excellent fruit character.

Winemaking
The fruit was destemmed into temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and cold-soaked for three days prior to inoculation with multiple yeast strains selected to enhance complexity. Fermentation proceeded over approximately two weeks, after which the wine was pressed at dryness and inoculated for malolactic fermentation. Aging took place over twelve months in a combination of French and American oak barrels.

Tasting Notes
The 2017 Clayhouse Syrah opens with expressive aromas of cassis, creme de violette, and bacon fat. The palate is confident and round, driven by dense black fruit and an undercurrent of savory umami. Timber-framed structure and bold tannins surround a soft, plush core of confectionery fruit, carrying through to a long, richly textured finish marked by star anise and earthy spice.
