2021 Eola Springs Pinot Gris Willamette Valley
Background and Terroir
King Estate is pleased to introduce this Pinot Gris from Eola Springs Vineyard, located in Rickreall, Oregon. Eola Springs was established in 1972 and has 100 acres planted with nine different varietals. At elevations between 300 and 450 feet, the vineyard features several different soils, from silty deposits left by the great Missoula floods to Columbia River basalt. Diversity makes this vineyard tremendously complex, with blocks varying by slope, aspect, and soil. Sharp diurnal swings make for cool nights and warm to hot days during the growing season.
Vintage Details
The Pacific Northwest experienced a relatively warm winter with below-average precipitation. Dry conditions did not abate until September and October, making 2021 one of the driest growing seasons on record. Cool temperatures were followed by wide fluctuations in April and May. The most significant weather event came in late June, when a heat dome settled over the region for three days, breaking all-time temperature records by as much as 10 degrees. Fortunately, plant growth was far enough along that damage was minimal. The growing season remained warm into October. Harvest produced very good to exceptional fruit quality.
Production
Fruit is whole-cluster pressed and fermented in stainless steel. Aged sur lie for eight months in stainless steel with weekly batonnage, where the lees are stirred back into the wine, to build texture and mouthfeel.
Tasting Notes
On the nose, the wine reveals delicate floral fragrances, notes of lemon and green apple, and some pear and orange rind. Similar fruit flavors of lemon, green apple, and citrus on the palate create a full, fruity mouthfeel with balanced acidity and ample texture. Citrus and spice linger on the palate for a satisfying finish.

Tasting Notes: Many of you will refuse to believe Willamette Valley Pinot Gris is ageworthy. Fruit from the right vines, in the right place and the right hands can prove you wrong. This might just be one of those wines. Aromas and flavors of lemon, beeswax and Anjou pears are interlinked with brilliant acidity and a sturdy texture. Enjoy now until 2034.
