2021 Yamhill-Carlton Assemblage Pinot Noir

The Series
Our Single Vineyard Designate series pays homage to the vaunted terroirs of the Willamette Valley. While constrained by these terroirs, as winemakers, we still have to summon the blending skills to combine, oftentimes, dozens of different lots of wines from the same vineyard while being mindful of the intriguing sense of place that terroir brings. These wines speak resolutely of where they are grown and are distinctly complex and powerful. The Yamhill-Carlton Assemblage is a blend of Pinot Noir from Yamhill and Hirschy Vineyards. Owned and managed by Ralph and Sue Stein, Yamhill Vineyards has partnered with the Langes since 1987. Both sites are planted entirely on sedimentary soils.

The Vintage
"After a relatively wet winter, the 2021 vintage in our Dundee Hills got off to a fine start. The only exception was the heat dome that appeared in late July. Fortunately, this occurred at a point in the growing season where the grapes were well equipped to handle it: well after flowering and before veraison. The added soil moisture from late winter months helped buffer the grapes. In fact, when fall arrived, we were amazed at how green the canopy was through the end of harvest. The vintage was on track to equal the total heat accumulation of the legendary 2015 vintage, but cooler weather in late September allowed for more moderate ripening, yielding elegant wines with substance and grace." - Executive Winemaker, Don Lange

Tasting Notes: The 2021 Yamhill-Carlton Pinot from Lange boasts a beautiful medium neon ruby core with a blueish rim in the glass. Even though this wine is very young, it is ready to drink and gifts outstanding notes of crushed red cherry, macerated black raspberry preserve, graphite, potpourri, dried sage, and just a smooch of iodine. Mouthwatering acidity and rounded tannins merge perfectly with a lengthy red fruit and herbal finish. Highly recommended.

Tasting Notes: The 2021 Pinot Noir Yamhill-Carlton Assemblage comes to life in the glass with an intense burst of autumnal spices and sweet rose, giving way to cocoa-dusted black cherries. This washes across the palate with a cascade of ripe wild berries guided by fresh acidity as hints of spiced citrus and cola form toward the close. Staining and potent, the 2021 lingers impossibly long while remaining fresh throughout, as just a bit of fine tannin resonates.

Tasting Notes: The deep ruby-red 2021 Pinot Noir Yamhill-Carlton Assemblage is lush and pure, with sunny ripe fruit of mixed wild berries, fresh pine, and delicate cola spice. Medium-bodied, it retains its ripe and pure feel on the palate, with fine tannins and a juicy profile that delivers mouth-filling, pure fruit without weight as well as a floral lavender perfume that lasts long on the finish. It’s absolutely delicious now and will have a solid drinking window over the next 5-6 years.

Tasting Notes: This assemblage blends the fruit of two vineyards, Yamhill and Hirschy, and leads with the scent of smoked tea and wild blackberries. It’s brambly, with a red-fruited core, mildly tannic but well-behaved in a berry-skin finish.

Tasting Notes: The acidity of this tangy critter might be a bit much for those who like things on the soft side. The wine is medium-bodied, with sturdy tannins and a crispy/crunchy mouthfeel. Aromas and flavors include raspberries, cranberries, lemon balm and bittersweet dark chocolate. Juicy stuff.
