Winemaker's Note
A very dear wine to Petrolo, created by Lucia Bazzocchi Sanjust in 1988, and made with the help of former wine consultant Giulio Gambelli. Torrione marks the beginning of the winery's new approach to winemaking, aiming to produce wines of the highest quality. Torrione is a photograph of Petrolo, a blend of grapes from all the vineyards of Petrolo, not only Sangiovese from Boggina but also from other historical vineyards, including Merlot from Galatrona and Cabernet Sauvignon from Campo Lusso. This wine keeps with the Tuscan tradition of adding French varietals to Sangiovese.

Production
Vinification: Grape selection with sorting table. Natural vinification with native yeasts in glazed concrete vats. Soft and frequent manual pumping overs. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation in wood.
Aging: Maturation in concrete tanks, 40-hl French oak barrels, tonneaux, and barriques.

Tasting Notes: The fruity notes of Petrolo's wines are increasingly pulpy and brocaded. Not only are they dense, but they are also balanced and enveloping in their pure softness. [...]. With greater oxidative and olfactory integrity, the balsamic cassis of the 2023 Torrione (increasingly unoxidized and clear), [...], dominate, bluish and extremely spicy in their long-lasting aromatic brilliance. Tasting Notes: The nose is both sweet and spicy, with aromas of black cherries, black pepper and black licorice. Blackberries and tea leaves lead the way on the palate, while crushed rocks and salinity provide balance. Solid but polished tannins provide an anchor on a finish of more salt and acid.

Tasting Notes: The organic Petrolo 2023 Torrione is a blend of 80% Sangiovese, 15% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon [...]. The fruit comes from vineyards [...] that contribute both structure and freshness. Dark and nicely concentrated, the wine shows aromas of plum, black cherry and sweet earth, followed by hints of nutmeg and cedar. Tasting Notes: A creamy and crunchy red despite being rather full-bodied, with cherries, berries, bark and hints of milk chocolate and hazelnuts on the nose. Long, refreshing and silky finish. A blend of mostly Sangiovese [...]. From organically grown grapes. Drink now.

Tasting Notes: I'm very happy that Torrione is now available [...]. It's a great value wine given its pedigree, [...], and it makes sense to have a few bottles ready to pull out for guests or a cosy [sic] evening in front of the TV. Combining a majority of Sangiovese from the Boggina vineyard with Merlot from the iconic Galatrona site, and a drop of Cabernet Sauvignon from Campo Lusso, it's an intense yet not overly concentrated (read: perfectly balanced) mouthful of generous, fleshy red and dark berries supported by subtly grippy tannins. It's not trying to be too intellectual but it does showcase the ability of the Petrolo team.

Tasting Notes: The 2023 Torrione is a blend of 80% Sangiovese, 15% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Sauvignon, [...]. In the glass, the wine offers an aromatic profile of thyme, mint, ripe cherry, red plum, and baking spice. Medium to full-bodied, it strikes a balance between approachability and structure, with refined tannins, fresh acidity, and a lifted, weightless feel. Elegant and refined, it’s already appealing but has the structure to evolve over the next 15 years. Drink 2026-2040.

Tasting Notes: The 2023 Torrione is terrific. A rush of plum, blackberry, rose petal, cloves and blood orange makes a strong opening statement. This bold, juicy Sangiovese-based red hits all the right notes. Dollops of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon round out the blend.

Tasting Notes: Bright cherry, blackberry, plum, earth and iron flavors mark this essentially fruity red. Its supple texture is offset by a line of dusty tannins as this winds down on the long finish. Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2035.
